Bring up the server window to down load files from server one.com and nothing is downloaded or seen. I have all the right information entered but no connection. The files on the server were created using the windows editor but thought I would at least be able to see the files as they were html. help to solve this would be appreciated, not doing something right, as I am not the worlds most savy person when it comes to web building

what do you have in the remote directory box? Should be something like:
/public_html/
if that's not it let us know. The other thing is to contact your hosting service to be 100% sure you're entering the right information. What you need from them is your:
Setup for the server. Most use the domain name without the http://, but some use different ways.

Do you need to set Passive not? (this is usually one of the big culprits so try this first toggling the passive setting to the opposite it's set at now.)
Those are the most critical things you need from them and to try.
