Yeah, it's still not working for me. I've had to work "around" it but I really need a solution! Thanks for all your replies though. Maybe I should start creating all websites with black backgrounds! lol!

I have found the same problem occurring with transparent gifs also, since downloading the newest version of VSD. It all worked fine on the old version, even in preview but now....broken! I have tried using the same gifs that previously worked fine and they do not preview as a transparent. Have to wait until I upload before seeing if it worked or not. DOn't like that idea much though!

GIF's transparency: moving toward the solution !!!

As you all remarked, GIFs transparency (or better said in VSD: UN-TRANSPARENCY) is a recurring problem! Some users say "it works!" and other have problems...
And because it's the same for me, I tried to analyze this behaviour.
I'm using the last VSD version (5.8), but I'm quite sure it will give identical results with previous versions.

First, it must be clear that it's known from VSD developpers that an object "intersection" on a VSD page will affect the transparency: so be sure you don't have such overlap!

To simplify, I worked with GIFs created by CorelDraw 11. They are 256 x 8 bits colours pictures: a gold disc with a pure blue background. The original GIF size is 200 by 200 pixels.

When you insert a such GIF into a background-coloured VSD page, you will have a transparent GIF as long as the VSD GIF picture object size is GREATER than 51 x 51 pixels !!!

In short:
- if you create a 40 x 40 pixels box and put the above GIF inside, the result will be an UN-TRANSPARENT picture.
- if you create a 70 x 70 pixels bot, then you will get a transparent GIF !!!

In my opinion, resizing an inserted picture in VSD must alter its colour content (or the transparency index)!

I placed a support request in order to have a fix (or at least an explanation) from VSD developpers.

In the meanwhile, I suggest those interested by gif's to try to avoid compression over 1:3 of the original GIF's size.

I also made a trial with placing a "Text" object over a GIF: it works!
And when 2 GIFs are intersecting, so far they have the same "transparency" index and they only intersect into the "background area", the GIF on the top is getting the transparency!
Many other experiences can be done... when you have time!

For me, it's all for the moment... hope it will help!

I just created a new gif and put it in VSD without any other images and text, only a background image. When I preview it, it's not transparent. WTF???!!! Why does it work sometimes but not others???!!!

Thanita,

A very good description of how to avoid the problem is in the message just previous to your message. As gilcor points out, there may be many causes. Be sure to verify that you haven't done any of the things he points out, and if you still have the problem, post a link to your problem page and indicate which image is giving the problem.

Well Bill,
I don't quite understand the "70x70 gif" working while smaller sizes won't. None the less, I can't show you what the problem is because the site isn't live yet. This is a link to the screen capture though. The tan victoriam background is just that...a background and not an image. So by placing the gif on top, it should be transparent but that's not the case here.

Thanita,

From the screen shot, it is obviously not an issue of the GIF being too small, but without some method of actually looking at the GIF and the code, I can't be sure of anything.

Have you checked the GIF online to see how it behaves on an actual web page?

Have you checked the online GIF with a graphics program to be sure it is actually transparent?

It is an actual gif. I've tried different gif images made the same manner and some work while other do not. I haven't tried it "on the web" yet. How should I approach this? FTP?

Thanita,

What I usually do is upload files I am working on to a testing folder, or if I am making a major change, I may create a version folder (name it ver25) and upload to that. Then if I have an index.html page in the version folder, I would enter something like this in my browser: www.mysite.com/ver25/index.html Actually, you can leave off the index.html and it will be loaded by the browser.

Bill,
Thanks for responding again. I'm going to try that. I'll post what happens.
:)
