I tried reproducing it, and I can confirm that flash apps without an xml file can't be added using the flash tool, they have to be added manually via the html tool. But they can't be previewed in locally. Once uploaded to the server, they show up all right though.

Here: http://www.coffeecuphelp.com/inger/testing/

The menu, which has a xml file, could be previewed, the Firestarter flash could not.

I'll report this to the developers.

Correct, only those application which have an XML file will work with that method. At the time FireStarter was created, we did not do this. On its next update cycle we will add in an xml file so you can easily do this. For now, you have to use the HTML Tool method.

OK, I see the previous posts of a year old saying that Flash Firestarter apps can't be viewed with Preview in VSD... which is exactly what I'm finding. I am trying to insert my little Flash animation on a page, and am seeing nothing happen. I dont know whether its working ot not.

Is it true that I have to upload the page to the web server to see if the flash actually works? I havent put my site up on a host server yet... so is there no way to view it first?

I have also tried Previewing the page with my Deafult browser, but after having to click thru all the IE security crap, it still doesnt appear to be running.

So Im not sure what to do next. Has FireStarter really not been updated in over a year with no XML file inclusion as yet?

Hi Scott,
You can view any firestarter project in VSD if you add the swf using the add files option under settings and copy as you know the html code to the page.

I'll be darned. That did it. I already had the files in the _Website folder, so i didnt think I needed to add them to where they already were. I guess the "Add Files" feature does more than just move files into that folder?

Than kyou so much for the help? Are there other CC tools that need to have their files added to the project in a similar fashion? I bought the whole "kit 'n kaboodle" web pack, so I will get to them all eventually.

Thanks again. You guys are actually gonna make me look good.
All my best,

Scott,

Just for future reference, you should be able to install (for example) Apache Tomcat web server on your machine, and "publish" your web site to localhost so you can view it "live." It would just take some nosing around their how-to files to see how it's done. Setting up a local MySQL server is just as easy, if you're doing database stuff.

Heh. Someone already posted info on a similar solution:
