VSD Basics - Post ID 214664
I have built my first site using VSD. I have a domain name and hosting through GODADDY. I guess I dont know where to go from here. I have tried uploading files through GODADDY and through the CoffeeCup FTP. I can only get the CoffeeCup FTP to work using passive mode. Using passive they appear to upload. Im not sure what to do from here. If they uploaded should they be showing up on my site? I feel like Im just missing a simple step or something. Any help is much appreciated.
Hey Richard!
You can do the uploading right through the software. This is much easier than having to manually upload with an FTP client. Here is what you need to do:
1. Go to the Publish Menu and select FTP Account Settings and add your FTP Account.
2. Verify that all information is correct and the Remote Folder path is not empty. Typically you would enter in a / or /public_html here but you need to confirm with your hosting provider what the correct path is. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THIS PATH IS CORRECT.
3. Go to the Publish Menu and select Choose a Publishing Destination and select your FTP Account and then click Save.
4. Finally, go to the Publish Menu and select Re-Sync Website.
With any luck, everything should be back to normal.

Thanks for the response. I failed to mention earlier that I originally tried to use the built in FTP in VSD. When I go to test the connection VSD "stops working" and closes. After getting your response I tried to do everything and just skip the test connection. When I go to RE-Sync Website it begins to "build on my computer". When this appears to finish I get a message saying "the parameter is incorrect". After this happened I called GODADDY to make sure the information I was inputting was correct. It was all correct. He was not able to help me with VSD however he had me download FILEZILLA and walked me through that. Everything worked fine and the site went live. It seems like it would be a little faster if I could just do it through VSD. Being new at this I wonder if there other advantages throuhg publishing through VSD that I don't know about so any help is appreciated.
Also, when I used FILEZILLA it looked as thouhg my website folder had already been uploaded to the server. I had to copy and move everything from that folder to the root folder to get everything to work.
Thanks again for the timely response. I replied on here rather than the ticket thinking if someone else has this problem in the future it might help them.

Goddaddy AGAIN !!!!!!!!
Uploading direct from VSD is so much easier, UNTILL you have over 20 pages then, using CC free ftp is what i would suggest if just editing one page, only because CC support is so much better than Goddady
Sounds like
in the remote folder you either put (A) public_html and didn't need to or (B) omited to put something like /mywebsiteurl
Could you itemise what you put in that folder so someone who uses goddady can advise you better.

I use GoDaddy all the time. Works great. Here is what you need in VSD...
Go to 'Publish' on the top menu, select 'FTP Account Settings'
Nickname: this can be any name you want to give your web site. It has nothing to do with where or how your site is uploaded.
Server: this is your Godaddy domain. Mine is gunsmoke.me yours could be something.com Do not enter the http://, just the domain name.
Username: this is your GoDaddy username that you set up
password this is your GoDaddy password needed to log into your server account
remote folder: this can be left BLANK if you are publishing to the root of your domain. If you put anything in here such as /test then that is where your site wil publish to. To access it you would then go to yourdomain.com/test/index.html Most just leave this blank and your site will be at yourdomain.com
Port: use port 21
Passive Mode: check the passive mode box. This works best on GoDaddy
Another thing is that most CoffeeCup Software works best when running as Administrator. Right-Click the icon for VSD and select 'Properties' then select 'Compatibility'. Go down to 'Run as Administrator' and check the box, then save.
The advantages of publishing straight from VSD are many. If you have a large website and make a simple change, VSD will only upload files that have been changed. You won't have to search through everything to insure you get all the right files uploaded to all the right directories. Let VSD do the heavy lifting.
Let me know if you get this working or still need more help. Good luck and welcome to CoffeeCup.

If that's all it is, can we get an Article if there isn't one already on this? Probably is, but I ain't searching for it lol.
Ever since VSDv7 I've had nothing but problems with internal FTP. The other programs operate perfectly with internal FTP. I gave up and started uploading all my VSD files with WS_FTP_HOME. I've never had it fail to complete an upload.
It'd be much easier to do it internally, but I haven't got the patience. Something that's not obvious is awry.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
PS - I've used GoDaddy since day 1 and they're up-time is 99.99%. I've had on many occasions the necessity to call their tech support as well and have never had an issue. 100% solution. MOST of my calls to them are at 1:00AM to 3:00 AM (that might account for the higher level of service). Fast answers, always right, etc. For $5 a month it's a steal.
