Visual Site Designer Crashed now...
I downloaded the evaluation copy of Visual Site Designer yesterday. I think the version was 5.9.4. I was trying it out today and was very impressed with the ease of use, however..... I was adding a picture to a page and it crashed. I am using Vista and I got the msg "Visual Site Designer has stopped working. " The only option is close the program. I then tried to restart the application. No VSD window appeared, just got the same Windows msg right away. I thought there might be some VSD process that was still running so I logged off and on, tried to start VSD but got the same Windows msg without seeing any VSD UI. Restarted the machine, same problem. Renamed the VSD website file I was working on just in case it was trying to load the same file and that was causing the crash but no luck. I will now try to uninstall the app and reinstall but that is surely not an acceptable workaround. Any ideas? It looked like a good buy but not if this is the kind of issue I can expect.
One known issue with Vista and VSD is the need to run as administrator (temporary fix) or fix permanently (has been discussed on board at length but I'm not clear headed right now and don't personally use VSD). Might try searching board for the permanent fix, but meanwhile if you right click the icon and select run as admin you should be ok.

Yes, a search on the terms "vsd vista" will turn up a ton of discussion on this. Here's one of the threads; in this one Cliff talks about the weird way Vista installs "compatibility" software.

Thanks. That was the problem. I've seen this issue with other software. It's normally because the software writes back into a folder within the Program Files folder and Vista doesn't like that. With software like that I install into another folder rather than within Program Files whenever possible. Didn't realize that VSD was in that category. I searched the forums but somehow didn't find any of the relevant posts. Thanks for the help.
Neil,
I don't use Vista or VSD, but thanks for the input. If you could explain exactly what you did, it may help others that encounter the same problem and don't know what you are refering to. Maybe a quick step by step. Maybe even start a new topic and title it something like "Using VSD in Vista". Just a thought.
