I am hoping someone can tell me the easiest way to transfer the work I did on a website to someone else. I created a website in VSD for someone and we will no longer be working together; however, I would like to give them the work I did for them. How can I easily transfer the website to them - keep in my they do not have Coffee Cup. I have been told you can use direct FTP to upload the files to another person's FTP account, but only if you have their log in information.

How can I access the html to give to someone else and can I just put it on a Disc and send it to them?

Thanks!

Hiya Candice,

Is this site live and up for them, and will it be remaining where it is? If so just give them the login details for the server it's on and let get the files on their own via FTP or through the server login itself.

If it's not going to stay where it is then just zip up the files and send them to them in email or put them on a disk or whatever you want to do. The files you would need are all the files that the VSD program creates for the website (not just the .vnu file and it's folder, but I would give them that also in case they decide to purchase VSD).

The main thing is to know where the files are on your computer. When it saves them on your computer it creates a folder that contains all the files that it also uploads to the server when you publish it. If you know where all that is then you have half the battle done. Just copy them all onto a CD or Disk, or upload them via FTP to their server, or email a zip of them all. Lots of ways you can do this, just that the main thing is that you have all the right files. :)

Good luck on it.

As JoAnn Stated getting all the needed files is the important part. You can do a save as and save the site to a flash drive and that will get most of the files. This is where keeping a dedicated folder for everything you add to your site on your pc becomes the most important. Lets say you added a photo to a page and that photo was on your desktop when you originally added it. Everytime VSD publishes it looks at this photo on your desktop to see if it has changed. This is where the transfer to another pc becomes a problem. That photo needs to be in the same location as it was on the old pc and it might still be a problem when it's looking at C:\Users\username\Desktop. This is why you should have that dedicated folder right beside your mywebsitename_website folder for safe keeping If there's any conflicts between the user name on the pc VSD will ask if you want to find the file and it will be pretty painless when their all in one spot.:)

Thanks Eric,

I wasn't aware of that deal with the files being outside of your working project. I guess I had always assumed it created a copy and put it into a folder with your project area. Now I know different too... I don't use the program, but I've learned a lot over the past few months about it hehe. You're a great help on it for sure! :)

I've gotten in the habit of creating my folders before I start a site (images, graphic, docs...). Everything plus the VSD files goes on a jump-drive for safe keeping, also handy if I want to use a different computer (they all have VSD on them :). Clients get a copy of everything on a jump-drive as well.

I've only had one person that wanted to manage her own site, and since it's for a not-for-profit, I donated VSD to her/them. I would include the cost of VSD in the price of a website for others who want to manage their own sites. Maybe offer a good price on some training :D

Just a little warning about jump/flash drives. Never pull them out when the light on them is flashing. They use flash memory and that can fail at any time. Spikes in supply can do it.

I love the little devils but do what I do have a dedicated hard drive (Less Likely to cark it) as a backup device. Just got a 1 terabyte for under $100. I tidied up my act following Eric's advice on another post and yes creating the folders first is something I shall do from now on, thanks for that, The simplest suggestion can be most helpful.

Hmm! Paintbrush Charge like a raging bull

I do have a few back up hard drives (1 terabyte, 500 GB, and a few smaller ones), but I'm not tossing those out to clients
I always click on the "safely remove" option before pulling a jump drive out – so far, so good :)

Same here :D After a hard drive crash on my main computer several years ago, I got a little fanatic about storing files. OK, I admit it... I am a digital hoarder
