Tracking Outbound Links - Post ID 197381

I need to track clicks on outbound links using google analytics. I have found the code

onClick="nojavascript... pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/example.com')

that I need to add after the link, but it is too long to go into the link box.

I have html editor, so I could add the code manually there after the link, but I don't know how to paste the code back into VSD after editing. I don't believe the utm tracking method will work since I am tracking outbound links and need it to show up in the analytics on my site, not the destination site.

Has anyone done this (or something similar) successfully using VSD?

Thanks!

VSD is not capable of importing anything at all that you change outside of the program, so I would definitely wait and see if someone has an idea how to do this within VSD so you don't lose your changes.

If there isn't a way to embed the extended links into VSD, is it possible to host the banner ads on another server and put the html that calls them up when the page loads and tracks the links (similar to how the forms load from another server)?

Robert,

There is one simple way to do this... Give each link its own name...

Example:

http://www.google.com#nameofad1

http://www.google.com#nameofad2

http://www.google.com#nameofad3

http://www.google.com#nameofad4

and so on.

This way when someone clicks that link it is a different link to each page and is traceable.

In Google Analytics you go to the content section, click on In-Page Analytics and this will show you which links were clicked on and how many time and much more.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion. I have added a tag to the link and checked the InSite analytics. The clicks are showing up for all the links within the site, but this is an outbound link (to another site) and is not showing up. Does it take awhile for the link to show up in the analytics site?

Thanks!

Yes, it should take a day because you are always a day behind in stats.
