Suggestions on how to solve "catalog"...

These are the errors I was receiving: "Error while uploading. The program could not create a catalog" and sometimes: "The program could not access the catalog on the server. Several things may be responsible for this issue, so you should try connecting again later."

Support specialist Lucia de Francisco responded with this very helpful note:

Hi Bob,

Thanks for contacting us! First, if you are using the hosting provider Godaddy you can leave the www folder blank.

The catalog error you are receiving when you leave this field blank is usually due to one of three things.

1. The WWW folder you have entered in the FTP Settings window is incorrect. If you are not sure what goes in this field, you will have to call your hosting company to make sure you have the correct one.

2. One of the Webpage names contains an uncommon character such as a "/". For instance, if one of your Page IDs is "news/contacts," this can cause the above error. If you remove the "/" you should be fine.

3. You do not have folder creation permissions on your server. When you upload through Visual Site Designer, it has to create a folder on your site. This folder stores your images and files that are displayed on the your site. If the program cannot create the file, it will cause this error. Once again you would have to contact your host and check your permissions if this is the case.

Also, make sure you are the administrator of the computer and that you have the program installed at the main C: drive.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Lucía de Francisco

The last two issues (server permissions and installing program on C: drive) both required fixing before I was able to upload successfully from within VSD.

Just thought I would share this helpful info.

I also noticed that when I go to the "show Page" feature, it is also showing all of our images in there. I don't think they're supposed to be included on that list.

One of the other websites (which is presently live) is no longer showing in the FTP settings!? If I add the FTP info once again, would it foul up the current website when it is republished? I realize that these are different types of problems but I'm posting it here as I can't help but to think that they are all related somehow.
Can anyone please help? Thank you.

Hi Holly,

The Show Page button will just drop down a list of the html pages that have been created. I haven't seen your site but if you have pages with just an image, then maybe you have called the page the same name as the image it contains. If this is not the case, you have somehow created a string of pages rather than images...

Re-entering the ftp settings won't change anything but I'd be wondering why the settings "disappeared"...

Given the other problems you are experiencing, I would suggest that you uninstall VSD and do a clean installation using the latest version which is available to download here:

Dave we have about 7 other sites on VSD and this is the only one where it seems to have made pages out of the images. We never made a page for each image which makes this all the more odd.

Will installing the updated version cause us to lose any or all of our old info? I don't want the other sites to go down and quite honestly I am a bit nervous about doing this in fear of losing the work that was previously done.

It shouldn't matter if you install the update. You should not lose anything. However, that being said, I would backup all your files and folders first anyway. Not because of any problems with VSD but just Windows in general.

As a note, I use VSD and have all my hosting with GoDaddy. Never a problem.

But I would still make a backup of all site files and folders before updating anything.

Thanks Gunsmoke I will definitely take your advice. I will have to put this off for today though as this was most definitely not on my list of plans. I'll just hope that it corrects itself somehow after I upload the new version. Thanks again! Until next time.... have a great day.

Do as Gunsmoke says backup your site. External drives are cheap now and a few minutes can save a heap of angst
