Normally I don't post to these forums because I pretty much look to see if any issues I'm having have been run into by someone else and solutions have been posted, but if I don't see what I'm looking for right away I generally bypass them and simply open a support ticket instead...(besides, as you’ll see from this post, I do tend to get long-winded at times…LOL!) This weekend has been a head-scratcher weekend for both my hubby and me; I had talked him into getting/using VSD to do some personal web stuff (he jokingly said he couldn't afford my web design services...heh, heh!!) I thought I'd post the issues/results here in case anyone else is having the same problems (you see, from reading back through these posts, a lot of people are saying that they're having trouble uploading but not specifying what the issues are, or what error messages they're actually getting). Just to clarify, I’m running WinXP SP2; hubby was running WinXP SP2 prior, but is now running WinXP SP3 as of yesterday.
For my computer, I have had VSD for just about 3 years, LOVE the software, and use it on a daily basis. Yes, I ran into a few ‘buggy’ things with each successive upgrade, but that’s all part of growing pains, and were quickly addressed by CC each time. The issue I ran into with VSD 5.9.4 was that when I tried to upload any of my sites, I would get error messages about files not being found (and do I wish to continue to upload). It turned out that CC is making the newer versions of VSD a lot easier for users to take their files from one computer to another, and if the files were ‘scattered’ across several different drives, that didn’t work so well, because the program was then looking for the files in different drive letters (like on my computer, I had stuff saved in C:, E:, F; and H:, but have been working at re-organizing all my website specific files into a more centralized location – in particular any of the Java software I use from CC too (Jukebox, Photo Gallery, Video, Flash Menu, etc., etc.) What I didn’t realize is that with the newest version(s) of VSD came a ‘shortcut’ button – that handy dandy little lightning bolt. Well, since I’ve been using VSD for so long, I was still doing things my way and bypassed the shortcut, just utilizing the long/manual method instead. But when I was having issues with the files not being found for upload (and seeing that they were still obviously displayed in the ‘Remove Files’ list, but not in the ‘Add Files’ list, I was stumped. After a few emails back and forth, and immediate responses from both Scott Swedorski and tech support through a support ticket, we finally figured out that I needed to move any files that ‘needed’ to be attached to the VSD site under the main ‘umbrella’ folder of where those sites were being saved – once I did that, viola! No error messages when trying to upload and the program didn’t try to look for the files in a different location! WooHoo! Time to celebrate!
BUT then my hubby had his computer crash this weekend, so he used his Gateway Restore disks that came with his computer to do a full restore, reinstalled Windows and then went and downloaded VSD 5.9.4 again to reinstall ‘fresh’. He had luckily saved his web site information on a different drive (including his VNU file), so he didn’t have to redo his whole website (of a whopping 4 pages). But when he tried to test the FTP connection to send his site, it kept giving him an error. I had him uninstall/reboot/reinstall and try again – no luck. Then I had him uninstall VSD again, uninstall his new Norton software, reboot and reinstall, and create a new dummy site to test…still no luck. Then I thought maybe he had a corrupt file (not that the file at CC was corrupt, but maybe his computer corrupted it on download – it happens!) So once again I had him uninstall VSD, reboot his computer, then I made available on our home network my downloaded exe file of VSD just in case - had him run the installation from my computer onto his, but still got the same error message when he tested the FTP connection (where it errors with an unknown error at the point of testing uploads, and if he tries to just simply upload, gets the 'cannot create catalog' error.) I even set up his same FTP account on my VSD to upload one of my websites to his FTP to verify that we had his FTP set up correctly (we both host at Bravenet, where the FTP has been recently changed to accommodate more variety of design software for upload). I was able to upload perfectly fine from my computer, so we knew it had to be something with my hubby’s computer.
So back to CoffeeCup we went to plead for help…and they came through FAST, as usual… I created a logmein account for my hubby, supplied the pertinent information, and within 10 minutes was able to watch fascinated as the programmer flashed through checking things out on my hubby’s computer…the issue was found in his Windows registry or system files – the directory, from the restore disk, named his Windows directory/system as ‘Windows1’, so when he installed CC VSD, the dll files needed for a successful upload were not in the correct ‘system’ folder, because of his restore application throwing things off. So the awesome person that was working remotely on my hubby’s computer copied the dll files over to where they needed to be and hallelujah, we have success!
For those of you still having upload issues with VSD 5.9.4 – either open a support ticket and be very detailed on what the issue is so the awesome people at CC can try to figure it out and get you up and running again – I have only had positive experiences with everyone at CC, even when I thought I might be going crazy they never made me feel like I was a crazy woman and every single time the issues have been figured out/fixed in a timely manner. I have not experienced that level of support with any previous software I’ve owned – CC definitely goes the extra mile!
If you are nervous about installing the logmein software on your computer – don’t be. The people at CC are some of the most trustworthy people out there, and besides, once they fix your issues, you can always change the password or uninstall the software from your computer.
And remember the saying ‘It’s in the details’ – that’s what is definitely needed in order for anyone to help figure out the issues…if you just say ‘it won’t upload’ there could be many different cause and effects that contribute, but more details (as in what the error messages specifically are, etc.), would enable someone else to narrow down the potential ‘fix’ for that problem.
Bottom line is – my sites wouldn’t upload because I had my java files attached to VSD ‘scattered’ on my computer. Once they were in a central location, VSD didn’t have trouble ‘finding’ them for upload. In my hubby’s case, it was a bit more complicated (obviously), but it shows how if you’re having trouble uploading on your computer, there’s no guarantee that someone else is going to be able to recreate those error messages to figure out what the problem is (like I tried to do with his stuff on my computer, only it worked perfectly fine from my computer), so the only alternative is to have the developers go through logmein to be able to see what quirky thing might be happening with your system files in conjunction with the CoffeeCup software. Let them work their magic for you, you won’t be sorry!

Sorry for the LONG post – hope it’s helpful to someone, though!
