Re-doing old site - Post ID 110467
I am new to VSD and am going through the videos and other tutorials. They're great--- thanks!!
My question is about the site that I am re-vamping. I have had a site for about 10 years that I built with a program called 'Hot Metal Pro' by Softquad. That software no longer exists - can't get updates etc, hence the need to find a new program and I am going with Coffee Cup. I also want to be able to add much more usable and dynamic content.
So I need to know if I should use the same page names --- index.html, family.html, genealogy.html, taxrecords.html ----- when I start my new site. I intend on taking down my old site completely after I have the new one up and running.
The reason I need to know is that I have lots of incoming links to my site from blog posts, Facebook, and websites all over the internet. If I keep the new page name the exact name as the old, I assume that when someone clicks on a link say from a blog post that should take him to say 'family.html' then it still will do it if the new page is named 'family.html' and the old page has been deleted.
Hope this make sense! Is there any other work around on this issue or what do others do that completely make a new site and need people to land on the pages as in the old site.
thanks K

Hiya Karen,
You can use any names you like for your new site revamp, just remember not to upload the site until you're ready for it though or better yet, create a subfolder that you can upload the new site to temporarily until it's finished so you can test things on it. That way it won't overwrite what you already have setup. If you have another server domain that you can test this on it would be better so you don't accidentally overwrite anything.
Other than that you can call your pages anything you want to so yes you can keep your name structures intact

Thanks for the tip on using another server. I think I will do that to be able to test and check it all out before I delete the old.
Is it better to use the same exact page names so all links coming in will land on the correct pages??

Yes, you can use exactly the same file names.
Ha en riktig god dag!

Jo Ann was spot on in her advice. Good advice Jo Ann!
