I have a link that isn't working, it's a link to a pdf document. I've tried lots of times to add it, but it's just not happening. Something I've notices is that the 'document' box on the link properties panel is not big enough to check all of the link path, what can I do to check it?

How about writing the link URL in e.g. notepad and then copy-paste it into the document box?

It's not a URL, it's a path to the document in my 'documents' folder! I've tried adding it using the edit>add files function, still not working.

Is this supposed to go online? In that case, I would do the following:

Save the vsd project to some location on your computer
Add the file you want to link to, and save again
Link to the document, it should be found inside the whatever_website folder, inside files and inside a folder called 'download'.

It will still not work on your computer, but once the site is online, it will.

It still doesn't work. Onething I've noticed is that VSD has put a zero at the end of the file name, but even if you take out the zero and put the address in the address bar, it still doesn't work.

After highlighting the text you want to link, click on Link at the top of VSD then in the Link properties box click on the "Document" radio button. Now browse to the PDF file on your pc.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Is that a very large pdf file you are trying to link to? I made a test with 2 pdf's, the first one 1.7 MB, the second 45.2 MB. The first one came up after about 3 seconds, the other one took a great deal longer, about 3-4 minutes.

I can't explain that zero, maybe you made a typo?

It's just a single page form, it shouldn't take long to come up. It comes up with an Error 404 page immediately.

It works when the "0" is removed (see screenshot, Chrome14)

This screenshot might be more meaningful, since it includes the address bar:
