Creating Update-able Objects - Post...

Hi,

Very new to VSD and as someone who's resisted graphical website tools I'm quite impressed with the ease of use and flexibility.

A question (and I apologize if this has been answered somewhere in the forums) .... The VSD paradigm seems to be around creating distinct pages one at a time. Although it's easy to use your work from previous pages by coping and modifying them I'm wondering what happens when I have an object that is included on every single page and then that object changes. How can I replicate that change to all pages?

For example I may choose to alter an image or navigation button that appears on every page. Do I have to change it on every page?

Any best practices that I should be aware of?

Thanks, Jerry

If your using images that change on a regular bases then I would suggest using an HTML box to hand code the image into the page and then add the image to your site using the add files tool. This way you can keep your image name the same but swap it from time to time with a new one of the same name. when doing this do not mess with anything inside the mywebsitename_website folder but update the image at the location that you browse to to add it to your site using the tool. I would setup a dedicated folder and setup the directory structure the same inside this folder to what the files you add to your site are set up. This way finding the correct file is easy to find.:)

Funny you should say that Eric as images are already CMS enabled. As you rightly said just make provision for them and rename new images the same. I realised that as I was completing the CMS system and I am thinking of dropping the images and adding 4 more text positions instead.

Eric,

Thank you for your suggestion. Here's a similar challenge.

I have created a "banner" across the top of every page that consists of text, links and images. This banner is at the top of every page. At the moment if I choose to change that banner I need to change it on every page. For example, I add a link to it or perhaps add an image.

Does VSD have a construct whereby this banner could be a re-usable component such that when the component changes the change is replicated across every instance of this component? I've looked around for it but I haven't found it.

Thanks, Jerry

The easiest way would be to make a just one page in vsd or another editor with just the banner coded into it. Now code an iframe into your pages linking to that page.:)

Eric,

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I thought that frames might be the way to go.

Eric is quite right. I use this VSD 'work around' all the time. Sometimes I run into problems though with an IFrame. When I 'IFrame' a guestbook inside VSD, and this guestbook has spam protection with Captcha or reCaptcha (maybe any other spam protection or any form submission), then the submitted information isn't accepted: always an error message. Anybody?

Probably something to do with the reffer. Is the guestbook on the same domain?

I don't know. I'll find out, I never thought of this. I'll let you know if this is the cause
