Problems switching between visual and...

G'day,

I'm very new here and I've just read a couple of posts that imply you may/will strike issues if designing in the visual editor and then tweaking the code in the code editor tab.

It looks as if you've been going back and forth between the visual editor and the code editor tab. This really doesn't work well as you have found out. You need to stick to one tab. All visual or all code

and

Wow...that is a mess of code!
I suggest you clean all that out completely and then as Eric says...stop trying to toggle between code and visual editor. Just go from your preferred editor (which you will then continue to use exclusively) to the preview screen to check your results each time

Is there really that much of an issue designing in one tab and tweaking in another? I would have thought that the app was designed to work that way.

Switching between Code and Visual tabs in the Editor will mess up the code, period! That's just the way things are.
Because of this, it has been suggested from time to time that the Visual part of the editor should simply be retired for good, but the CC people have decided, at least for now, to keep it. This may be for reasons of continuity with past versions or whatever - I'm not sure. The compromise has been to make the Visual tab hidden by default and to have various, ominous warning messages pop up whenever you activate the Visual tab or try to switch between Code and Visual.
If you need/want the Visual 'Editor', you should use VSD instead. :)

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum. A big thanks to all those who have made CC what it is today. Currently I am evaluating CC (v 12) as being my next web editor but am undecided as there seems one major sticking point: I find myself forced to give up any idea of coding directly in HTML 5 if I wish to use the Visual Editor.

I have been basically a hand coder (using apps such as EditPlus and NoteTab) but have been looking for a decent WYSIWYG editor, mainly so that I can easily update (only) the text on a web page without having to dive into the full code. The basic layout of the page would not change.

As time passes, HTML 5 (and CSS3) are becoming the way to go. I fail to understand why even the latest version of CC (12) still persists with this dichotomy, and what is more distressing is that in some posts in this section of the forum people are saying "Give it a spin if you're a coder and oh.... STAY AWAY from swapping between the code and visual editor tabs in that program! (really wish they would just remove that visual one completely!)."

If it's possible to alternate between both methods in HTML 4, why so difficult in HTML 5? HTML 5, though not fully stable, is supposed to make life easier, no? Would someone please tell me what are the stumbling blocks?

What's the developers' roadmap here? Are we ever likely to be able to code visually in HTML 5?

With the emergence of purely HTML 5 editors like BlueGriffon, I wonder what the thoughts are of other CC users about this dilemma. Thanks.

The Visual Editor cannot handle HTML5 which is why we block that DOCTYPE when you switch between the two editors. The reason is the Visual Editor uses the DHTMLED.OCX which is control created by Microsoft and that only handles 4.01 DOCTYPE's.

I just don't see us ever supporting HTML5 inside of the Visual Editor unless Microsoft decides to resurrect this component.

Thanks Scott for that incredibly fast reply! :)

Crystal clear now.

Sounds as if M$ are not a great fan of HTML 5 (probably because it's not one of their products so they can't dominate it!). Er..how long do you think it will take them to update this control, or will hell freeze over first? :)

I really don't see them updating that control anytime soon. We have decided that in our new Web Editor we are building, we will just write our own code so that we have 100% control over everything.

New Web Editor? *Pokes Scott for more info* :P

Will this be a new HTML editor or will this be a new combo editor? Will we finally be able to stop saying "don't swap between the visual and code editors"? Inquiring minds wanna know! :)
