OK, I finally got it to validate, by changing the button code to
<div class="g-plusone"></div>

which I found an article referencing on the web.

But there's another BIG lesson I learned with this. When changing the actual structural stuff, you have GOT TO, GOT TO, GOT TO ( I can't emphasize this enough!! ) TURN OFF THE W3 Total Cache plugin in Wordpress, while you work!

Otherwise it drives you crazy because things are cached all over the place and you can't see the changes after making them! ( especially between browsers, which may have different cache times of their own? )
