This is only peripherally associated with web design, but I'm sure that many of you out there know all about these things - also!

My immediate need is for screen capture of individual frames from high-resolution videos in the WMV-format. In connection with this, I would also need video editing software that would allow me to go frame-to-frame in the video to find and stop the ones I want to capture as jpg images.

Any suggestions for software to use? (preferably free... )

Yes, I had been doing some searching too... I downloaded a couple of trial versions, but I have been disappointed so far. So I was posting in the hope that maybe someone had had some experience with specific software and could recommend it...
Some inadequately documented trial versions can be frustrating when you run into dead ends with them and you don't know if it's a bug or a trial version limitation! This can be a very time-consuming activity!

BTW: I just noticed on the Google search results page that you posted, that my original forum question from a couple of hours ago, was already in the top ten results! Google can be very quick and efficient sometimes!

Great news... Windows Movie Maker supports the wmv format and is able to perform the operations you've listed. Best of all, it's free - and it's Microsoft.
