I think the alias way is the best way to go, as if you decide to un install wamp at some future date, you could toast your website files in the www directory if they weren't backed up.

good link tom, thanks.

HIya TomH,

I don't think I'll need it for working with my shop as I don't really need to preview much of anything in that as of yet. What I do need it for though is an HTML site that I incuded SSI on, but it doesn't seem to be working or I've not done something right yet lol.

All my pages for this site are in .shtml format as that's the only way I could get it to work and what the suggestions on the site I was using said to do if it wouldn't work. No problem there, the SSI includes all work very nicely, but I can't view anything of them in the HTML Editor at all. Does this wampserver not work for this? Or is there something else I need to do to accommodate extensions other than .php?

And yep that's what I did david, used the Alias setup.

Jo Ann,

I would check to make sure all services in wamp are running. See the image I sent and click on the appropriate link.

I don't see why you are not able to see the shtml. I run every type file there is just about and my browser executes just the same as when they are up on the main server. I have to run out for a while but if you still having trouble later I'll try to help you figure that out.

David, you are correct on the deinstall the thing. Course I never plan to uninstall...... but, the www folder is part of my automatic routine backup. Actually I started using wamp with the cms system I installed for some people I was helping and never thought about saving directly to the folder from the html editor. I always just copied and pasted over to the folder. Have to give your system a try.

Thanks TomH, I'll have to take a look at this later myself too as I'm off to a movie with the hubby.

I did do the "Start All Services" link so as far as I know it was all started. I had to go in and edit some of the config stuff because it kept telling me it wasn't passworded which took a bit of time running through all those settings in that setup page and then editing the password part in the config file. Other than that I am not sure what else to try. I'm "assuming" here so I may not have this correctly in my mind for all I know lol, but I'm assuming that when I have this running and I look at any of the pages in the directory that I have setup I should be able to view them within the HTML Editor Preview window and see all the parts and pieces (all the SSI's etc.) the same as if I were viewing the page online? Or am I assuming too much and I just need to load the local page up in the browser to view it?

I'll check here when I get home, thanks all for your assistance, I'm sure it will not only be helpful to me, but many other total novices when it comes to this stuff :)

Jo Ann,

Also in the wamp server tray popup, check on the Apachie link and modules to make sure that the include module is checked (loaded). This normally a default load of wamp, but I guess it makes sense to check. :P

Then: from Apachie Tutorial

To permit SSI on your server, you must have mod_include installed and enabled. Additionally, you must have the following directive either in your httpd.conf file, or in a .htaccess file:

Options +Includes

I don't know if you will be able to read the files from the editor preview in addition from your normal browser. Someone else will have to answer that or figure that part out.

I've been usin wamp for many years and it's the easiest and fastest for me, since I'm a dummy..
I have a server on the local network set up with putty, and have used xamp - both of which have a better stack than wamp,, but wamp is so easy.. It's almost as neat as CoffeeCup :)
But you will get spoiled with wamp,, I just looked and have 20 databases and 38 sites in there,

ssi will not work in the html editor because that is a server side thingy..
BTW, wamp has a bunch of httpdconfig files you can pick from.

Hiya Dave,

So in other words, in order to see the files after I edit them I have to do what? I'm trying to figure out how I view them then to see that my changes are working.

You have to set up the alias if using a directory outside of the WAMP www directory and open the php file in your browser http://localhost/MySite/

Hiya Tom,

Yeah I setup the Alias and that part seems ok, but my files aren't php files they're .shtml files and when I try to open http://localhost/Mysite/ it just shows me a directory of the files in that folder lol. If I click any it shows me the code rather than what the page looks like... dang it I'm so blonde on this junk LOL

C2Dan got this fellow going with WAMP and .shtml files in two posts explaining the steps in this thread. It's a short thread. :)
