Hello all,
Maybe someone can in explain in a way that even a novice like me can understand:
I have our site working the way it should as far as https ALL variants of the site DO redirect automatically to https.
Now what I am confused about is using "Canonical" I have read and read and searched and still confused. What I get ( if I am right) if gong from http to https Google really will decide on its own robots that the https is the "Canonical" site? or am I wrong  The using of "canonical" in the header is if l you have Duplicate of the pages but don't need if only going http to https??? If we must add the "Canonical" tag in the header do you add on on ALL pages of the site? for me that would be about 55 pages. It than is added on the https site as the http one one cannot work with as the server only allows only one site at a time correct? Anyone have an example than HOW to actually write the text if that is what we need?
As always I appreciate any and all help.

Like most websites you do what's necessary for yours. I looked for an easy to understand site that would explain it better then me and I found this one.

I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

This is a site I built for my work.(RSD)

Thanks again Eric I appreciate all your help.
I agree about doing what is necessary for one's own site. I bookmarked the url and will read and re-read a few times. But what I am thinking since all variants of the site do auto to https I will leave it alone for now and let Google robots do there thing. Also from what I read 301's are better???

I would agree on the 301 as far as SEO is concerned.
