My idea with the pngs was that they would be transparent overlays of the jpg background and I could link from them to other pages. Jpgs didn't seem feasible because they were not transparent even if they were created to be so. Since time is of the essence, I finally decided to make jpg copies of parts of the jpg background and place those just right over the background before linking them to other pages. It took a day of speedy clicking, but I'm linked up properly and completely now!
