Pardon me if I've got the wrong software, but can tables be put into VSD??

Not directly. If you want to add tables, you would need to use the HTML Tool located on the left hand navigation toolbar.

Thank you for the quick answer Scott.

As an aside, we want to have an intranet based web-site, but I'm struggling to figure out how to upload to one of our internal servers.

Any ideas?

If the internal server doesn't have a qualified domain name, you would need to upload to the IP address of the computer. Or another easy way would be to map that server to a folder on your computer and then just save to that location through VSD.

I have that, but how do we then make the website available in html?

When you save your website in VSD it automatically generates all the HTML files for you. Just look in the folder where you saved your project.

If the mapping solution is chosen, wouldn't all the PCs within the intranet have to map up the server as well? I seem to remember having done that dozens of times when I was working...
