Table/page formatting issues - Post...

I was wondering if anyone could help me out? I am redesigning our family website, and have run into a problem with the picture banner and navigation buttons.
I have them laid out in a table.
The problem is that if you make the viewing window smaller, they wrap. I do not want them to wrap, I would rather a scroll bar pop up to scroll the width of the page, because the wrapping just looks ugly, and I lose function/viewing of the drop down navigation buttons.

I have seen other sites that have accomplished it, but when viewing the source code, it is so hacked up or done in a proprietary editor that I can't make heads nor tails of it.

I have a test page online if any of you would like to take a peek, and give me some advice. (the links all go to the live pages right now, not the new design)

Thanks in advance!

If you look at the source code on your home page, you will see where it says that the <table> width set at 100%. If you change that to a specific pixel width, it should give you the scroll bar you are after.

So, where it says:

<table align="center" width="100%" summary=""> try changing that 100% to say 1024, or 900 or whateverworks for you. Start at 1024 and then save and preview that in your browser and you should have the scroll bar you are after.

You know, people usually ask for this to happen the other way round!

See if that helps - Good luck

Thank you once again mark!

I knew it was something simple that I had to be overlooking. I hate tables, but I don't know enough about CSS to make it work.

Setting the table to a fixed pixel width did the trick. And yes, I know most people want the opposite. Usually I do too, but the way I had the photos and buttons laid out, it jsut didn't work.

Thanks again!

Tracy - That was a pleasure. As long as it is looking the way you want, then that is all that matters.

Just remember use 100% anytime you want it to fit all browser windows, and set it as a pixel width when you don't.

Good luck with it all, and those are cute kids on the home page. I believe I was that age once, apparently, so my Mum says.

Hi,
I was reading this and thinking that another possible solution is to use the "nowrap" tag. Use the word nowrap without quotations in the <td> tag like this <td nowrap> and every line of text in that td tag will not wrap. You will need to put break tags <br /> to end a line of text and start a new one. That way, even if someone has different screen sizes or browser preference for larger fonts, there will still be no wrapping of lines within your table. Just remember to use the nowrap in every td cell you need it.

I tried that first. It worked on the picture banner cell, but for some reason I wil still getting a wrap on the guestbook button. It had me baffled to say the least.

Anyway making the table a fixed width seemed to work. I set it at 1000pixels and even on my smaller laptop get jsut a fraction of a scroll. So most IE browsers with full size screens won't even notice. I am still playing around with the indextest page to see if I can figure it out since I still have an issue wiht the contact button not lining up with the guestbook button as well. oh the fun of web design :-)

Thanks for the tip though. nowrap normally seems to work, but I think with the CSS info for the navigation bar that there is something in there that is preventing the nowrap from working. I am CSS illiterate, and just found the code elsewhere to copy/paste.

You just set the table width at something extreme, as Mark says.......like 1024..........but I would say even wider, so that the scroll is inevitable.
I have seen several art gallery sites that work well this way, with all the work literally scrolling on and on to the right.......
Made an ununsual change to the normal vertical scroll.

I notice you have a "no right click" javascript on your web site. I just wanted to point out that many people know how to get around that, so please do not count on it stopping people from taking any of your images.

If someone liked your link images, it would only take seconds to "steal" them from your site. I am always curious to see how well the "no right click" script works....it only took me 30 seconds to find all the images linked to your home page, and none of those had any protection to stop anyone from downloading them.

I am not taking your hard work, and I wish it was possible to stop people from doing just that. I only want you to be aware that those kinds of scripts don't work as well as most people think they do, so use caution when placing familly photos or origional works of art and other stuff you don't want copied and pasted elseware.

Oh yeah, I know. I also have some encryption software that I need to apply. I have been just waiting til I tweak out all my bugs before applying it. I just have the noright click in there for now with the source code compressed to make it a little tougher on the novice.

Besides, the majority of our family pictures (1000's) are in the photo albums in whic you have to create a login that I approve to get in. ;-)

Thanks Though. I always like to look at other websites and how they are set up, and if you know how to hit "view source" from your browser toolbar, you can grab what you want...among other things. :-)

The thing to remember about the No Right Click issue is that it will stop the vast majority of people. It is true that if someone want to take your pictures, then they will. But the average Joe who uses the net are stomped when the no right click appears.

The only way to stop peole stealing your work is don't put it on the net. Now that would be stupid. What you need to remember is that for the average user, no right click is OK. It is eneough to deter.

Look, you have a home. You have window locks, door locks, maybe an alarm. However, if someone wanted to break in, then they will. But these deterants you have are more than sufficient to stop the vast majority of thiefs.

So don't worry about your images too much. Your no right click is sufficient to help you. You could also set the images as Background images and employ the no right click. That would be easy to do, but why over complicate matters.

Here endeth the First Lesson
