I have heard others talk about the files and folders on their host server containing a folder called "public.html". What is this and what is the advantage/disadvantage?

I created my shop with SCCP and let it do all the uploading and there is not public.html folder, so does this mean that anyone can see what is in my host server file directory?

The public_html folder is the only folder where your website can be displayed. Sometimes it is called the www folder, og html_docs og www_docs, but it is the only folder you can upload to if you want to have your website seen by others with a browser.

Now a great deal of hosts configure their servers so that you don't actually see the level above the public_html, instead you get right into it. That may be the reason why you haven't seen it.

So anyway, your files and folders have to be inside the public_html folder, not the other way around.

Thanks Inger,
I have attached a shot of my directory on the server. Every thing seems to be under the root (/).

Your 'root' here is clearly your public_html folder. If it were not, the site would not be visible on the web.

I have been trying to upload the changes on my site with little luck. When I was using the trial version, I was told to publish to public html. I did this and it worked. Now I have the paid version and, even though I am uploading it to the public html, I get no changes. I have cleared my history and viewed it on several computers with no luck. The changes are not there. How can I make sure I am publishing to the correct location?

Have you got an independent FTP client? If not, CC free FTP or Filezilla will do. Install one of them and navigate to your site on the server and take a look.

If the files are in the right place and you still see no changes, did the changes you made involve adding files (Edit -> Add Files) ? And did you remember to do that? And did you remove (Edit -> Remove files) any redundant files first?

If it doesn't work, try Publish -> Resync.

Hiya Leon,

It would also help to know which program you are using when uploading, HTML Editor or VSD or what other software it might be. :)

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
