Welcome aboard David. I've been playing around with CSS and with a little push from Inger in the right direction I coded several pages for one website and a landing page for another that has several sub-domains that I use to share my soccer pictures. You gain the most knowledge by just digging in and trying it. I was in the same position when I started coding VBA for some Excel applications at work. At first it looks like a foreign language but then as you get your feet wet things become familiar.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

I actually think that David's feet have been wet for quite some time ;)

As far as I understand, it's html5 and css3 that is keeping him busy right now...

You mean focus on html5 and css3?

Well, I would say focus first on html and css until you know your way around them (maybe you do already?), and also learn which workarounds you have to use to make it all work in all browsers. THEN you could move on to html5 and css3.

If you start from the other end, you'll just become frustrated each time some browser doesn't manage to show what you were intending. Html5 and CSS3 are not yet quite standardized, and various browsers are supporting various bits and bobs of both, but very seldom all. There was a table that Scott once posted a link to, showing which browsers can handle what. Maybe we can find that link, or maybe someone knows.

Eric, I have seen that you are a fast learner, and I'm sure you will know it all before I do! ;)

When that page is open, check also where it says 'UPDATE: Check out our Web Designers' HTML5 & CSS3 Checklist'. It's on a yellow background under where it says Blog.
