Is it possible in Virtual Designer to set up a page so that people other than myself who visit the site can post comments about blog entries and photos, but not alter anything else?

As far as I know you will need to have a serverside (mysql) database to store visitors comments but I dont think it's possible to set up anything like that with VSD. I had the same need as you for user comments and I used Google Blogger. It's free and you can set it up to look like a forum and messages and photos can be uploaded by users. It can be set up to be public or just accessed by people you choose. Set up the Blogger and have a link on your main site that users can click and go and make postings.
