I publish an address provided by my alma mater's email-address-for-life service. The service subjects incoming messages to an excellent Spam filter (Symantec Messaging Gateway), then forwards to my Charter account. (Clever of my alma mater to do this, since it lets them keep their finger on alumni as potential donors.)
This email forwarding trick allows me to change ISP any time I like without having to send address-update messages to the world.
I use the Mozilla Thunderbird email client set up for IMAP. I treat the live IMAP messages as an in-box. I either respond & delete or save incoming mail to some categorized local folder on my PC (which runs Linux).
On the road, I log into Charter's browser-based Web mail application.
