FTP Help - Post ID 167196

I need to upload a VSD site to an unfamiliar host (small web dev company, not a big commercial host). Anyway, we're not getting much in the way of assistance from them....
I just used Direct FTP to have a look at the server. I was told the site needs to go to the httpdocs folder. In that folder there's an existing Index file and another folder with some Wordpress stuff in it (we don't need).

Here's what's showing in the Index file:

So, my question – if I use the FTP within VSD, will it "know" to leave the above content alone (we need it to stay), or will it over-ride this?

That file will actually get overwritten if you use VSD to publish. There is no way to override that. You would have to upload your site manually with Direct FTP if you want that file preserved.

So, using direct FTP, do I just send everything to the httpdocs folder?
Or, could I copy/paste it into the VSD site (Edit Header) and then upload?

I would send everything except the index.html file. You would then just manually rename that index.html to some other name and upload that to the server.

I'm lost. It sounds like I still need to use the Direct FTP and send all the VSD files except the index page? Then re-name that and upload it? Then how do I get it to be the index page once it's on the server?

I don't know if this helps or not, but the new site is currently on my S-drive:
ccd.coffeecup.com

It's going to replace a sub-section of an existing site, so all of those pages will be removed from that site except one that the newsletter sign-up link goes to.

If you need to preserve any content on your server, then you cannot use VSD to publish as it will always replace (overwrite) any existing content that has the same name. You basically have 2 choices here:

1. Upload with Direct FTP. This means you upload all the files except the index.html page
2. Keep a backup of the index.html page you need to preserver. Publish with VSD and then immediately after, rename the index.html page on your server to something like index2.html and then upload the backup index.html page with Direct FTP.

Alright! I get it now – I also realized I could delete that stuff since the page we really need is hosted on Market Volt. I should have checked that out a while ago, instead of trusting what I'd been told. :P So I got rid of it and uploaded from VSD.

The site is live at it's new home :)
