I believe you will also need an ftp server installed locally so that the VSD ftp client can talk to it in order to transfer the files where you want.

Why not just copy and paste? After all, it is localhost.

I have Apache on my machine as a local server. How can I redirect the setting in VSD so that I can FTP my website developed in VSD to my localhost htdocs area? I shouldn't need to specify username or password as it is all under my control, I believe.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but if it is the same box, why not just use File > Save and point it to the htdocs folder? You may have to re-organize the file structure a bit, but it more or less should work that way.

Otherwise, yes you would need to also install an FTP server.

If I could do copy & paste it'll work for me but the .VNU file is not really transparent to web browsers. Do you know how I can convert it locally to HTML text?

Hi

I am trying to edit contact details on a previously set up website. I have purchased the website as part of the business I purchased. I have been told I would need a HTML Editor. I have all the login info. I have purchased Coffecup editor thinking I would be able to do this. I have opened the url in question directly from web and made changes in text that are required. Have then uploaded, and all seems to happen, however changes are not showing on the webpage. I am a complete beginner with this, and need to get this done!!!

Hi Karl!

You should setup you ftp client (their is one embedded in HTML editor) to connect to the server that is hosting your website. You will then need to download all of the website files and folders to your local machine. Then you should make your changes to your html pages (these files will have .htm, or .html extensions). After you make and save your changes locally be sure to test them out locally first. HTML editor has a built in browser that works well, but I really recommend that you also test it in IE and Firefox also. HTML editor allows you to setup additonally installed browsers to test with from the editor but it doesn't hurt to run them natively. After you have tested the code on your local machine then you will need to reconnect to the hosting server via ftp and upload your files (overwriting the existing ones) to the ftp server.

Depending on your hosting providers configuration the files uploaded via ftp may not immediately change online. Check with your hosting provider if the changes are not immediate, after checking that the date/time on the files you think you uploaded are correct. I have experience with a know-it-all mom & pop shop that takes at least 24 hours for changes to become visible. This isn't standard industry practice but it is what you may be dealing with.

(for all the whiz kids ftp and hosting enviroments are on different machines because they alleged ftp is a security vunerability, but they allow frontpage extensions on their hosting enviroment)
