I had a project that I was working on recently using CSS & HTML and ran into a situation where different sized monitors caused a page to look a little odd with some elements out of place. I'd done a cross check for browsers but really hadn't considered how larger monitor sizes might be affected and had a chance to take a peek on a larger monitor and it was 'yikes'. I designed at 1280x1024 and am wondering if I could have emulated that same problem on my smaller monitor by just tweaking the screen res for a look. I normally use a 19" monitor.
Kind of an interesting read here: http://elykinnovation.com/blog/?p=883
Anyway, as designers - what do you all use to not only cross check across browsers but for the various size monitors (perhaps that's only resolution vs physical size). Don't know how other settings may negatively impact a project in the development process but it appears screen res can. I'd considered DPI and Aspect Ratio too but haven't tested either of those elements. Thoughts ?

Check out responsive design. Although I have decided if necessary to do a screen size check with Javascript and redirect to pages that suit that size monitor.

I'm liking this a lot...
In Firefox (latest version), go to Web Developer > Responsive Design View and see how your site looks
We've had a discussion about responsive design going on here:

As more devices (with yet more resolutions) pop up, trying to design for each and every one – including landscape/portrait modes – will become a no-win, never ending prospect. Even with separate desktop/laptop and mobile sites, there's still no best size to plan for each. We all have so many options for web browsing – even TVs. RWD (responsive web design) is worth looking into.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. (Douglas Adams)

Thanks... In my experience so far, most browsers look alike (or VERY similar) with the exception of IE. That seems to be the finicky one...

I have confirmed this several times.

I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

To those of you exploring responsive design options, Artiseer in their latest RC 4.0 has incorporated responsive design into their template creation. They use a jquery script to read monitor size and redirect to a responsive css file...I have just completed a primitive test site and it works----- pretty slick...
