Buying and selling question?

A friend of mine has asked me to put a small online shop on his website. I haven't done this type of thing for ages. He doesn't want to sell much, just a few odds and ends. Would paypal's website payment's standard be ok with this?. Also how would I go about doing this without using his login details with paypal.

Another related question. People who are doing this (web design) semi-pro or professional what type of software do you use to create online shops, or do you just use paypal?

Thank you for any answers.

*Points to the site he's on being CoffeeCup Software* well duh! CoffeeCup's Shopping Cart Creator I would think would be the answer for most of your questions :P

Ok not to be so silly lol, paypal's standard setup will work just fine for what you're wanting regardless of the size of the shop. If he's only doing a few items and not restocking them or even if it's just a few as in 2 or 3 things completely, then you might find using the Paypal buttons easier than using software for a shop and less hassle and work (well maybe lol not sure, haven't setup a button in Paypal in quite a few years so it might be just as much work lol).

Just a few tips how nice the Shopping Cart Creator works:
You can copy and paste the products and just change the few areas such as Item Numbers if you have any assigned in the Titles and descriptions, change the description for the new product, pricing and you're done. (Don't know if Paypal has a dupe type setup that allows you to copy their buttons or not)

It's very easy to setup, you can have a shop up in less than an hour, and in the case you're talking about, probably half hour, as long as you're using an included template. You can purchase the Shopping Cart Designer ( I would suggest the Pro version for maximum customization features ) and create your own template, or alter those that are included as I did. Doing that it would take a little bit more time, but even that program is pretty easy to figure out after you play with it for a while.

You don't need to enter any ID & PW for paypal into the program so the client (person(s) you create sites for) doesn't have to share that information with the site builder. All that's added into the shop information for Paypal is the email address and the choice of which types of payments to receive and the type of payment processing you want to use (in other words standard etc.)

Pretty simple setup, and the Pro version that is coming soon will have a lot more features to work with also. Worth the price and the effort if the person(s) you create shops for have more than just a few little items to sell and even then it's a nice setup.

Hope that answers your questions and if not please ask some more :)

Just to add to Wolverana's answer- paypal buttons are easy to make but of course you would need to construct the page to put them in so there is more coding that using a cart program. I think a cart program looks more professional.

Thanks Wolveran for that information. I knew someone would say get the shopping cart ha ha. Yes that answers my questions. I've put paypal buttons on websites before but ages ago, I was just trying to pick peoples brains to see how they go about things.

Artlife thanks also for your answer. Coding/programming websites is not the problem but you never usually see that many questions about to set up shops unless its in a website package.
Yes your probably right about the cart program making things look more professional, Ill give it a try out.

I have a similar question. I have several companies that I am building shops for. One is up and running nicely www.mrhypnosis.net another that I am currently building gives me the opportunity to change the billing account through Pay Pal but does not allow me to either remove google Check out or change it to a different Google Check out account. What is a simple solution? You thoughts are appreciated!

Hiya Ray,

Are you building this other site with SCC? If so then go to the Payment area of your shop and change the dropdown to the Google Checkout. There's a checkbox on each of the different payment options that allows you to turn it on and off.

If you're not using SCC then there's no way we could answer that question :P

Hiya Ray,

The drop down isn't actually the activation of the payment options, it's if you have it checked in the dropdown's choices. In other words, check the Google choice and see if the little checkbox is marked. If not then I would suggest not just an email to support but put a ticket in to support if that's not what you already did. That will be your best bet for getting help via support. I sure hope you get it figured out though :)

Just for future reference also, there are multiple payment plans that show in the drop down and each and every one of them can be turned on all at the same time by setting them up. This gives you more versatility in the types of payments you can use rather than a specific choice of which one :)

Thank You Jo Ann for your answer.
You solved my problem. For some reason I assumed that if I didn't select a payment option it would not be turned on. I never thought i would have to select an option i did not want to turn it off. Just another prime example of what happens when we "assume".
Thanks for your help,
Ray:)

hehe no problem Ray, usually they start out in "off" status, strange that it would be turned on at first for you, but maybe you checked it by accident thinking you were turning it off and then forgot about that, who knows lol. Glad it's fixed for ya and have fun with the rest :)
