Absolute vs. Relative Paths/Links...

In a Word document, I can add a Absolute Link, but when I upload this document (after converting it to a PDF file) the Absolute Link is still there, but pointing to my 'C:' Drive.

Instead of the Absolute Link, I want to add this as a Relative Link, so that the linked file is in the same folder, as the PDF file - hence I open up the PDF file (on my website), click on the link within it and it opens up the linked file.

Hence, Does anybody know how to add a Relative Link?

When you insert the absolute link, did you type in the http://www.mysite/myfolder/mypdf.pdf in the address box instead of searching your local PC and adding it? Try it that way. It should work.

Thanks.

No, instead of adding the http version, I searched my PC for 'ETTA_Magazing.html' and this name went into the address box, but the Word 2010 file gave the Relative Address - see the two attached files.

The purpose of the exercise is to upload the Word document (as the converted PDF file), along with 'ETTA_Magazine.html' and to call 'ETTA_Magazine.html', from within the Word document. But with the calling link as a absolute address (instead of relative), it can't find it - any solutions?

Here is a working example:-

Internal .pdf hyperlink

---------------------------------------------

All I did was to save my PDF file into the same folder as the page I was linking to, I am assuming you will also have the files in the same place once they are uploaded to your server.

From your attached images it look as though you are doing one of the correct ways, even starting with http...... etc. should work.

I will try pulling a file from a different folder on the server later, but it should work just the same.

In the address bar do as Tom suggested and type what the absolute address will be on the server after the document is uploaded.;)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

I tested the Relative linking and I entered what the Relative address would be after uploading and it worked just fine.:)

They both show as Absolute when you rollover them.

Either way will work, you just have to enter the location as it is on the server, not your local PC. :)

That is what he has done in his attached insert1.jpg - so it will work as long as both files are uploaded into same location.

Thanks for all your advice.

However, there does seem to be a difference in inserting a hyperlink in Word 2010 and Word 2003 (which I use at work), being that Word 2003 gives the Relative Address only, not as in Word 2010 (see previously attached file 'Insert2'). There may well be an option, to toggle Relative/Absolute Addresses on or off in Word 2010, but I can't find, or is there a bug in Word 2010?

However as suggested, by entering the Absolute Link of the uploaded file as the called Hyperlink, I am able to call this file correctly - I'm not really sure why the Relative Link version does not work, that is by having the Uploaded file, in the same folder as that file, which is calling it.

Looking at Word 2010 Help, it has some information on turning off/on Automatic Hyperlinks, well it doesn't seem to work for me, if I am reading it correctly.

Thanks again.

I've got Office 2007, and I have the option 'Edit hyperlink' when I right click one. I think that option was in Office XP too, which was my previous version. Doesn't that work in your case?
