Right, I am stumped with this. I have put some pictures on a website for a customer, and when they upload via DirectFTP and they go all strange. The images are fine on my computer, but when they go onto the server, they go all crazy. Please help me! I'm losing my hair fast!!

The website is http://www.rotherhamdistrictscouts.co.uk The pictures are on the District Commissioners page and on the Group pages i.e scouts, cubs etc

Thanks in advance!!

They look like corrupted image files.

You need to re-size and optimize the images before uploading. A couple of the images that I tried to download were 2 Mb ("Camp flagbreak.jpg") and 4 Mb ("Deep bedtime.JPG") in size. Those jpg images should probably have file sizes well below 100 Kb each.

I also get an error message when I try to open the downloaded images (see attached screenshot)

Hiya Simon,

This may sound like a crazy question, but, did you use Windows 7 Microsoft Paint to do that image? I've had some issues since putting in Windows 7 that involve the preview and paint applications and color distortions is the main issue. The Preview window just loves to add speckles sometimes, and does exactly what your pictures are doing at other times. Paint sometimes likes to add a pinkish hue to my images.

If you're using those 2, try using something else to make them and see if that works. I've been using irfanview which works pretty slick for most any image editing and it's free. You can get it here:

If that's not what you're using then... never mind. I've had it happen to me just what is happening to you, but my issue has been with the preview and paint programs so I don't know what else to try.

Irfanview certainly gets my endorsement as well! :)

Thanks Per, I'll get that sorted. Hopefully that will work!

Jo Ann, I don't use paint, but before the images were sent to me, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case! I'll pass on that information.

Thanks for your help, as always!!

Right, I've messed about with the dimensions as file sizes. Still an issue. It seems to be that when they are uploaded to the server, the JPG images get corrupted some how. Any idea?

Have you tried making them gif files instead.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Just out of curiosity and for posterity, have you tried uploading with a different FTP program to rule out DirectFTP doing something to it? I doubt that it is, I use it myself and have never had issues like that, but always good to rule out all possibilities.

Another thought... Size your images in an editing program (such as the one mentioned above) before uploading. They look rather pixelated on screen.
From one of the images:
768px × 1,024px (scaled to 362px × 452px)

Better to upload the image at the actual size needed rather than loading an over-sized image and counting on the code to size it ;)
