yet when i go to the folder...it is wide open for everyone and doesnt prompt me for a username and password...what am I missing??

How long has it been since you uploaded the information to your server? Are you sure the upload worked? One way to check is look in that folder with an FTP client and see if the .htaccess file has a size larger than zero. It also can take a few minutes for the host server to "catch up" and start regulating access.

The software creates the .htaccess file from the data you enter, and you then need to upload it. Have you set it up to talk FTP to your host server yet?

I thought I had. I have entered in all of the FTP info, I can see all of my folders and directories and when I was done, I hit upload to the server.

Now, I am doubting if my ISP's server is compatible. When I did the test, it said it was, but based on other issues I have had with them, I am wondering if they have the proper PHP installed....would that make an issue?

It might. Does your provider offer Cpanel access? That often gives you the ability to set the access restrictions directly. Mine does, but the CC software makes it so much easier I switched. You can contact their tech support and make sure they support .htaccess file password restrictions.

Still, that shouldn't have prevented the upload of the file. Compatible or not, it should still have been there. Can you navigate to your home directory in your FTP client and see if you can see other files that start with a period? There should be one or two. Some clients treat them as hidden/system files that aren't displayed by default.

I'm still leaning towards it being an upload issue.

i cant see the files anywhere when browsing my ftp client. I have another site that is hosted elsewhere...that I seldom use. I am trying to find the FTP info and I will try it there. I have an email into my ISP now.

Spinny...you have been a big help...and I appreciate your time.

I have now found the domain info from the other ISP. I can log in, and upload files. I now see the .ht files but I still dont get prompted for a username and password.

Thoughts?

What is the URL to the directory you tried to protect? I'd like to try taking a look.
