Not sure if I should be starting a new thread here but...

I have created a form which integrates with mailchimp and it all works... unless.... I complete the form using an address already on the mailing list (and have the 'sign up' tick box selected).

If I do so I get the following error (which also screws up my page layout):

Error 214 while subscribing to the mailing list: rob@****.com is already subscribed to list Bean

Q: Is this supposed to happen?

Q: Can't (or shouldn't) it just ignore the fact that the address is already used?

NB. This error appears after the form is sent - preventing visitors from seeing the 'Thank You' message.

Hiya Robert,

That is generated by MailChimp, not by the Form builder form. It should actually open an entirely new page and not do anything at all to your own site page, is it not doing that?

Also, not sure if you're aware but your Newsletter button doesn't work. Might that have something to do with it? Probably not, but just letting you know I get this error when I hit the Newsletter button on the right of the page.

Not Found
The requested URL /bean/signup.html was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Hi Jo,

thanks for the help... The error appears after pressing submit, in place of my 'Redirect to custom HTML page' option. I'm pretty sure that during testing of an earlier incarnation of the form, this error did not happen.

Any suggestions of a fix or work-around for this error would be greatly appreciated!

NB. The Newsletter button on the right doesn't work because the page is in a temp location - if the page were 'live' it would link to http://www.beanandbrush.co.uk/signup.html

Cheers,

Rob.

That sign up page link is the one that you are using that is giving you this issue right? I'm going to sign up a couple times so if you see my name you'll know it's me just testing your form.

Ok I've tested and this is what I see when I try to use my email again, looks like it's supposed to to me and it's still on your site page. I'm using the most current version of Firefox and also tested on the most current version of IE9. Looks like it should to me.

Hi Jo,

I think we have our wires crossed...

The problem I have is with the form on the left of the page. (Sign up button is fine, just link not working on temp version)

Assuming you are now on the mailing list, please try and send a message using the form (and leave the checkbox ticked to allow the form to add you to the mailing list) - Hopefully this will recreate the error I'm seeing...

I've been using Chrome - so to rule out the browser I've just tried IE and seen that my form looks like a dogs dinner! Yikes! - Anyway, the error still appears in IE.

ah I see what you're getting at now. Yes that's messy looking, but I think part of that is how you have it setup on the page. You need to make room for the form errors at the top and bottom of your form as you can see by my screenshot. That is how the form program works. The part that is really nasty is that it is overlapping your map. I wouldn't include a map below the form, I wouldn't include it on the same page as your form even unless you can do a side by side thing instead of under it. The way it's setup now the text from the box I typed a message in is overlapping the map to the point that you cannot even resubmit it because the button is under the text box.

Keep in mind that moving that map down will look riduculous if you try to accommodate the form because the message box will vary in size according to the message length your users enter so you have no way to know how long it will be, only the max length so you'd have to accommodate that max length for it to all be visible and that could be too far down the page.

I don't know that there is a whole lot you can do about it other than move that map out of there and to somewhere else or rearrange it so it's on the side of the form instead. Error messages will always go to the top of the form and therefore will push the rest of the form down the page. Strange setup to me too, but unfortunately that's how it works at this time.

Don't know what else to tell you there, maybe someone else will have some ideas of what you can do to combat that spacing issue.

Here's a screenshot of what I see in Firefox current version:

By the way, just thought I'd let you know I did get the reply email which works quite nice so that's working at least :)

Hi Jo,

thanks again... I'll have a go at tidying the form up, it looks fine in Chrome and I've carefully sized everything so that even with error messages (apart from the big MailChimp one which I'm still determined to get rid of) it remains within the box I've used to frame it.

By the way - The message box doesn't re-size - if you type lots of text, scroll bars will appear.

I must admit, the one thing I'm struggling with on the new version (as opposed to the flash version) is the whole variable page length thing. The old Flash version never re-sized so forms could be placed anywhere. If I could request one feature it would be some way of restraining the form.

I'm going to experiment with the other 'Confirm Options' to see if they also show the MailChimp error box. I'll report back soon...

Cheers,

Rob.

All 3 confirmation options have the same result - Giant red error box which screws up your form and doesn't tell your visitor that the message has been sent (in fact it looks like it hasn't when it has).

This looks really unprofessional and the only fix I can think of is to not use the mailchimp integration...

Any ideas?

Well one idea would be not to integrate your Mailing List with the rest of the form? Typically the last thing I expect when I'm filling out a form is that I am going to be automatically (defaulted checked to On) added to someone's mailing list if I forget to uncheck a box. Most of the time any mailing list I see (unless it's while I'm setting up an account or making a purchase) I have a separate form that I fill out for it. Try that maybe? Create a separate form for your Mailing List and unlink it to your message form. I'm very sure that will fix your Mailing List / Mailchimp issue 100%. That's about all I can think of. Your form on the other page you linked when I asked works perfectly and even with the little error message it does what it should. Keep it separate like that and just remove the Mail Chimp integration from that form that's giving you issues. Add the Mail Chimp on the side somewhere in a small location that doesn't have any problems with a message above it. Works well for me :)

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
