user.cfg.php file and updating a form

Hi Folks - I've been able to get my form working by manually updating the user.cfg.php file with my hosts emails settings.

Problem is, if I update the form and re-export, it overwrites that file. I can carefully update all file except this one, but wondered if there is an easier way? Would be nice if there were settings for this, what would be included in the export each time - maybe there is and I'm missing it somewhere?

Any help?

Who's your host? Do you have a link to the form? The more information we can get, the better someone might be able to help. We've got some pretty slick users on here.

I would keep a snippet of the part of the file in a safe place and change that out after updating your form.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

I guess my point is, there are so many other items in SETTINGS, that get exported for convenience, why not have custom mail settings also in SETTINGS....?

I think they would allow that Dave as long as they can give your phone number out to all the users that can't get those settings correct.;)
I just a matter of having bullet proof apps that work.

Yeah I can imagine...though I don't see the harm in making things easier for the people that know what they're doing.

I think it's even more difficult for people if they have to dig into a script to modify it, rather than in a dialog box.

In other words, if someone NEEDS to use custom settings for email, currently they HAVE to change that script in code, which in my opinion is more difficult than having it easily accessible in a dialog box. Just my 2 cents ;-)

I have to ask the obvious question here Dave. What settings are you actually needing to change? The program is simple enough to set up the email address(es) for so I guess I am wondering what you're finding you need to change outside of the program?

I think he's on a host like NoDaddy or something that has strange email requirements.

I have to use email authentication, and I can't use "localhost" as my email server, since email is not on the same server as the web. So this requires modification of the user.cfg.php file, which is easy enough.

But if a change is made to the form and re-exported, it overwrites that file. If the program were able to store values like mail host, email authentication, etc, it could simply create the user.cfg.php file when the export is done with the right values.

It's not that big of deal, it was just a suggestion. I guess it's not a problem for most people, unless you need to use authentication, etc...
