drop down value different from item -...

I searched and searched but could not find a straight answer.
Can you have the value sent to the database be different than the item name displayed in the drop down list?
I wanted to create my drop down in a text file and load it with the predefined options selector and I was hoping that there was a symbol or separator that could be used to differentiate the displayed item name from the value sent to the db.
Thanks.

I can select "use as contact list" and use the colon to space between the item name and my preferred value name and it previews properly, but I'm wondering if the value after the colon selected for that drop down will be sent to the database.
In settings, if I don't choose the drop down value for the notifications email, then I shouldn't have a conflict there.
(I am using "required" as well.)
Hope I'm making sense.

Hi Gary,
Three options that I can think of to get what you want.
1. Alter the form dropdown html and validation after export.
2. Use a hidden element that gets submitted with help from Jquery if a particular drop down option is chosen.
3. Use a script to alter the value in the database after being submitted.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.
