POP and IMAP email going the way of...

I heard this week that MS, Google and Apple are moving toward eventual elimination of POP and IMAP in their email clients forcing everyone to go to hosted email. For example, the included Win8 email client does not support POP or IMAP already. You have to get Outlook or a different email client. Anyone else hear anything about this?
