Hi Tom, I think most of these scripts were made for websites based out of Indiana.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

A friend told me I can download software that tells me how hot my pc is. I found it, downloaded it and it's showing I have 4 cores. Core 0, 1, 2 and 3.

Core 0 is the hottest, running at like 75ish degress C. Fan kicks on often. The other 3 cores run in the 60's. I guess this is hot, since my friend says his run in the 40's!

I have the original 2 little black fans inside and here's the info on my pc, all the info I have:

HP Pavilion p6180t customizable Desktop PC

* • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
* • Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q9550 [2.83GHz, 12MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]
* • SAVE $30! 8GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
* • 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
* • 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
* • LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
* • Integrated 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet, No wireless LAN
* • 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, audio
* • TV tuner, dual format ATSC-NTSC with PVR, remote
* • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
* • 20% OFF! HP 2.1 30W stereo speakers with subwoofer and remote control
* • HP multimedia keyboard and HP premium laser mouse
* • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

* • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

My friend said I should get something called a arctic cooling freezer, and gave me this link:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176157

but how do I know that will fit my pc?

Thanks for any help!

I am so glad you posted this. I been saving to buy a new computer and considering an HP. This is a great help for me, because I will definitely be wanting to see the inside of it before I buy it. Thanks.

I am not an expert at all and hardware is my downfall. But I have a couple questions out of curiosity.

What program are you using to determine the heat of your cpu? I use Speccy. My pc (it's old) has a large fan in the front to push air through vents in the back. It also has a small fan on the processor like yours and runs at about 43 degrees.

Are you having problems with your computer slowing down?

Interesting article on cpu temperatures. You get the feeling that it is okay to have 75ish temp. It has some interesting information on what can cause computer complications, besides cpu overheating: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000687.htm

However I came across this website that had info specifically on your processor. It says that Minimum/Maximum operating temperature (°C) 5 - 71.4. Here is the link to your processor on their website: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Quad%20Q9550%20EU80569PJ073N%20(BX80569Q9550).html

I then looked at Youtube and found this video that shows how to install the fan your looking at. If you watch it, it might give you an idea of how it sets on the motherboard and you can measure if it will fit or not: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKWh24l5-tQ

From the page you had for the fan it looked like the measurements were 104 L x 58 W x 126.5 H mm - but I don't know if that is the complete unit including the bracket the fan sets on.

What is interesting is the fan will be positioned to move air towards the outside fan, so that might help lots with other components as the air will flow better through.

Thanks for sharing, this really helped me think about what I want in my next computer.

Keep us posted on how everything turns out.

Kim

Hi Kim and thank you so much for all the info!

Right now I have just FireFox, Skype and Yahoo messenger running. Nothing is running slowly on my computer right now - even though the fans keep kicking into high gear every few minutes.

When I have the programs above open, along with Photoshop - and many tabs open in FireFox, sometimes FireFox will freeze up for a couple of seconds, but I'm not sure if that's related to the fans kicking into higher gear or not.

Oh, the temp software I'm using is called core temp - I just downloaded it at download.com earlier this morn. Never knew there were programs that monitored the temp of the computer! Very cool!

Just downloaded, installed and ran Speccy:

Operating System
MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz 76 °C
Yorkfield 45nm Technology

RAM
8.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz (7-7-7-20)

Motherboard
PEGATRON CORPORATION Eureka3 (CPU 1) 36 °C

Graphics
HP 2709 (1920x1080@60Hz)
1024MB GeForce GT 120 (MSI) 47 °C

Hard Drives
977GB Seagate ST31000528AS ATA Device (SATA) 27 °C

Optical Drives
hp DVD-RAM GH40L ATA Device

Audio
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Vista)

There is a slight diff b/t the temps showing on Speccy vs Core Temp - about a 10 degree diff. Either way, my computer is running hot and I have no idea why. The fans seem to be working okay...they are constantly running, but they keep kicking into a higher gear & my pc never did that until a couple of months ago. At first they kicked up every now and then but right NOW it's like every minute or two. PC seems to be running fine. No crashing or slowness, but I'm not running many progs.

Thanks again Kim for those links! I will probably find a local tech place and take my pc to them and let them do some testing, maybe install a mega fan thing lol!

Thanks again & hope you all have a great day!

Well LOL!

I just checked my task manager thingie and here's all the stuff that's running:

http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af1/AmeliaUSA/taskmanager.jpg

At one point the temp on Core Temp showed 92 for the core 0 - guess that's the main core, and firefox froze for just a second, that little blue spinning circle showed up. But when I opened photoshop to save the screen shot of my task manager, it opened just fine.

Anyhoo, so far so good, no crashing. Hope my pc is okay. Gonna call a tech place soon!

Is your heat sink seated properly? Not too much thermal paste (or none at all)? Fans are working? Case door intact? If all these check out, make sure you don't have a photo of me as the desktop background as that has been known to get things over-heated. :)
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

Haa Haa Tom.

Hey Amelia, have you downloaded the program ccleaner.com? I use it once to twice a week to keep my system in good working order. I was having problems with things locking up and such. I ran the cleaner and registry cleaner on my system with that software and it cleaned it right up. I had tons of conflicts and once they were gone, my system did not lock up. It might help if you use the program to see if part of your problem isn't just a need to clean up the registry and such. Also have you defragged lately? That same software company that you got speccy and ccleaner from has a cool defrag program too. I do all these once to twice a week now to keep my system in top form.

Tom, do you think it be a good test for her to boot up and run her computer a bit without the side cover to see if it is indeed trapped heat that is causing the over heating of her cpu? Just an Idea.

Kim

I see it in her list of processes.:)

Oh I see it too, I missed it.

Amelia, was ccleaner running when you took a snap shot of your software in process? or do you have it run everytime you start up? Just curious. I don't have it run at start up, I am not a big fan of things auto loading up unless it is very needed.

Kim
