I have found there are 2 good ways to replace images. The very easiest is to right click the image and get the image info details. This usually gives you the path of the image and what I then do is rename that image to add _original at the end of the name. Then I upload the new image with the original image name and wallah, all done.

The other way is to go through the Admin system and check through the file editing setup there. What I do there is I still get the image name that I'm replacing as well as the location it's in. If you're using firefox browser hit Ctrl+F to use the search feature and type in the name of the file. This is the easiest way I've found to locate the reference to a file I want to replace such as images. Once you find the location to edit, you change it to the filename you want to use.

When you say no new messages image, which one are you talking about? got a link to the forum?

I am downloading the Darking theme right now, I'll see if I can help you further find where the images are.

......

Ok I'm looking at this theme installed on one of my test sites and I don't see a lot of things on it. The CSS is pretty messed up so half the text is in black and doesn't show well at all, easily fixed, but I don't see hardly any images for much of anything on it so I guess I still need to know exactly which images you're talking about to know for sure. A link would definitely be helpful too :)

Thanks Jo Ann. It's the on.png that I would like to switch to a animated gif.

That's the location of the Off image, which I'll assume is the same location of the On image. If you want to just swap the image, then that's where you'd do that. If you want to actually change the code that references the image that goes there then do this:

1. Open your Admin Panel for SMF and navigate to the Themes and Layouts area.

2. The tabs over the middle should have the ones that reference the Themes and Layouts and the last one should be to Modify Theme, choose that one.

3. Choose the first choice to "Browse the templates and files in this theme".

4. Choose the first choice for BoardIndex.template.php

5. Now use the Ctrl-F feature of the browser (I believe this works for IE also) and type in on.png and do the search in that file that opened on that page. It should take you right to the locations that reference that image. There are more than one so be sure to find them all (shows me 3) and alter them accordingly for your new image name/type.

Hope that helps, good luck :)

I'll have to change the code because I want to change it to a gif. I was messing around with fire fox and found the image refrence code on the page but can't figure out what file I have to open to change it. I already altered the off.png to say no new mess..

Tony do you have access to the cPanel of your webserver?
Yes, Jo Ann. It seems I had to upgrade my hosting package to get MY SQL. This I have done. I created a "MY SQL database and got a password etc. I then logged back in to http://mysite?smf/install.php. This gave me a form, which I filled in and hit create, but still cannot get in. 'Got a help ticket pending with the host........Oh Dear!

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
