Do wonder though if Windows Safari is a special version? Internet Explorer has a special version to run on apple computers!

You mean IE 5 for the Mac? While it wasn't the same as IE 5.x for Windows, Safari for Windows is the same as the Mac version. Subtle differences may occur for various reasons, including font differences because the OS's don't have all the same fonts, and they are smoothed (or not) differently.

You can always check your pages in otherwise unavailable browsers using browsershots.org or a similar service.

Inger & Cary,

Thank you for your helpful comments. It is often important just to know something is possible.

If anything interesting comes out of installing Safari on Windows XP will post it here.

Hope you both have had a good weekend.

all the best

You would think all browsers would follow exactly the same atandard. It's very annoying at times. :o

You bet it's annoying! but I can't see that happening - at least it won't happen while Microsoft thinks it is a law unto itself.

I like using FF but the text is rather spidery, bold text looks pixellated and italics in particular are ugly - I prefer IE's anti-aliased text. Have Microsoft got a monopoly on TrueType technology?

I still use tables (I hear an ominous rumbling on the horizon) because I find it easier to cross-match between IE & FF, but I'm checking out posts on this forum and experimenting with the Force's way of doing things - hopefully one day I'll be coming across from the Dark Side.

I use Chrome most of the time, although I have FF, Safari and use Opera. I don't actually think there is a browser that's perfect and I believe Chrome is still in it's beta which it's been for ages. I find it fast and visually very nice. However it has one massive flaw that I've found and that's you sometimes can't buy or pay for certain things. I always have to go back to another browser when my gas bill is due, which is absolutely stupid, so it's not quite what it should be.
Another annoying thing I find with it, is when you mouse over links the link name comes up at the bottom left hand corner. I mean why? If people like this feature fine then they can leave it on, but there should be a preference which there isn't.

Have you tried Safari with these problem sites? It has the same rendering engine, but maybe the sites just haven't bothered to widen their browser support to include Chrome.

They may have the same rendering engine, I don't know. But I do know that I came across aa problem with Chrome and a background image that I didn't have with Safari for Windows. I think it had something to do with extra white space but it's been a while.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

They both us WebKit (not sure if Chrome uses the latest version), but there are definitely differences in their javascript engines.

That's very interesting Cary, I've looked at some of the problem sites with Safari and they are coming up exactly like they do in Chrome.

Well, at least the browsers aren't at fault. It's just poor support from the sites.

My home page passes W3.org validator, both the html and the css yet the page renders correctly with IE, but not with FF and Safari. Infuriating.

Any idea of where to start? I started with the Modern Chic theme.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
