Can I make my own home page? - Post...

I would like to make my own 'home' page that resembles Yahoo, but without the ads. I want widgets for: weather in a variety of cities, a little basic news, TV listings, calendar, etc. I'm aware that they are available for weather and stock market, but what about the others? Could I copy the code from Yahoo?

I have plenty of room on my (GoDaddy) space, but would like it to NOT be connected to any of the websites that I have on there. Can this be done and not have it available for everyone to see? Any thoughts? Anyone else done this?

You will need some scripting/widgets, that's for sure. Just remember that the more you add, the more resource intensive the site will be. This may lead to a performance hit on shared hosting and possibly a note from the provider stating you need to be on a VPS or dedicated server.

Well, I see that Yahoo and others have lots and lots of widgets. Think I'll try it - along with about a hundred other things i'm working on now....

Yes they do... BUT most of those sites, also have their own dedicated servers (not just leasing space on them, but owning the hardware itself). They aren't likely too concerned with storage or bandwidth.

I have my own 'start page' that I've set as the default opening page in my browser. I have a whole lot of links that I need quite often, links to weather services, news (like TV stations and newspapers), my bank, post office, phone book, local pages, CC home page etc etc. I opted to have no widgets on the page, just links to what I need. My page is not private in the sense that nobody else can see it (here, have a look, it's nothing fancy: http://www.fjermeros.net ), but if you want to keep it private, you don't have to upload it to anywhere, just keep the file locally on your machine. Of course you can't access it from anywhere else (unless you keep it on a thumb drive that you carry with you).

Inger,
A neat place to keep track of your most frequently used bookmarks!
Clicked on a couple of links and stumbled upon a remarkable picture of the Queen, - with her closest friends... (re. kilts and such...) :)

Oh, so you found THAT pic

Some of the links seem to be broken now, I need to go through them all and check. A project for a rainy day...

After looking around a little more, I stumbled upon iGoogle. They have lots of options, so I'm going to try that for awhile. They don't have the large prominent ad in the middle of everything that Yahoo does. Will save me a lot of time by not creating my own.
