Annoying dialogue box in Windows 7 -...

I normally use a PC running Windows XP, it suits my needs quite well.

Recently I bought a Toshiba notebook with Windows 7 to run PowerPoint presentations for classroom training.
I developed the PP on the PC, including a hyperlinked list where I simply click on an item to bring up a presentation file when needed.
They work well on the PC but on the notebook, when I click on a PP hyperlink Windows 7 insists in putting up a dialogue box warning me about opening files from untrustworthy sources.
I don't need to be told this and it upsets the "flow" of the presentation, I tried looking up Windows Help to find out if I can stop the dialogue box from appearing with no luck.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya Zipper,

Are you talking about the User Access Control window? I find it super annoying also, and I'm thinking to turn it off completely since I don't recall ever in my entire life of owning a computer where any software started that wasn't supposed to (I'm sure it will the minute I turn it off lol). If that's not what you mean then I'm not sure what box you're getting. If that is what you're talking about, the only thing you can do is turn it down a notch which really is the stupidest most useless setting I've ever seen lol. You still have to click th stupid thing off to run the program, the only thing it doesn't do is darken the screen and take full focus.

What I'd love to find is a way to add programs to a trusted list that doesn't pop that up at all. It's really strange because 99.9% of my programs make me do that every single time I open them, yet Firefox doesn't, go figure lol even Microsoft knows it's trusted :P

Hi Jo Ann, in my case it's having to click "yes" every time I call up a PP presention by clicking on a hyperlink within another presentation.
I'm simply opening a PP presentation but I get asked if I want to really open a file fron an untrusted source.

After reading your post I decided to search Help from within Microsoft Office instead of Windows 7 help.
I had assumed that because this box doesn't appear when running Office on XP on my Pc, that it was a Windows "thing".

Anyway I searched Help on Office and found a way to make certain files trustworthy via PowerPoint Options/Trust Centre/Trust Centre Settings/Trusted Locations and made the folder containg my PP files a trusted location.
The I restarted the notebook just to make sure ..and.. viola*!

*No, it didn't work!!!!
I still get that irritating dialogue asking me to confirm if I want to open files from an "untrustworthy source".

What is it with MS, they either treat you like a retarded jackass or hardly give you any security at all?

haha you had me going there thinking it was gonna work! lol

Have you tried just setting it to trusted with the Windows Firewall if you have it on? Or your Firewall software if you don't? That sounds like it might be that type of issue rather than a windows 7 issue to me.

That sounds like a macro warning. And macros can be be bad so it's not such a bad thing.

To stop displaying macro (macro: An action or a set of actions that you can use to automate tasks. Macros are recorded in the Visual Basic for Applications programming language.) warnings, change the security level for your presentation to Low on the Security Level tab (Tools menu, Macro command, Security submenu).

If Tom's link doesn't help, here's another that seems to address your exact issue but might be a bit dated (does mention 2007 though):

Thanks for that, I found info for Office 2007 and Windows 7.
It involves modifying the registry, something I haven't done before - I will do some more research on backup/restore before girding my loins and venturing further.

Well I modified the registry - it didn't stop the dialogue box from appearing, although that could be due to hamfisted editing on my part.
I backed up the registry as suggested but when I tried to restore with the backup file, the backup was reported as unsuccessful. The laptop seems to work OK but I'm seriously wondering if I should replace Windows 7 with XP as my ol' XP desktop doesn't exhibit the symptoms at all.

Anyway thanks to everyone for taking the time to help me.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
