Placing pages into specific folders...

In RSD ver 2.5 I have created sub-folders for 4 sections that may grow over time. My problem is that I don't see how I can place files in the folders I want them in. Suggestions?

I may as well add here that I would search the forum page if I could find a search function, and then I might just find the solution to my problem if the question has already been asked about - hint, hint.

Hi Edward,
Export your protect to the directory of your liking then upload to your host.
if your looking to place files in directories within your RSD project click on Resources.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

also, go to the main forums page and look for the magnifying glass -- top right -- to do searches

true, sometimes words as well as icons can be useful

and welcome to posting!

Russell,
Thank you. I'll make use of that.

Eric Rohloff,
Thank you for the reply but it doesn't solve my problem. I have made the folders I want in the resources and now I want to create pages and save them into these folders. I won't get back to my project for a day or two and before I post again I'll see what I can find on my own.

interesting question, but what you're asking for is certainly not the way the, I presume you mean HTML, files are created -- placing them all in the one directory simplifies linking them (relative links vs absolute) links, but it's fairly common practice to use folders for CSS, javascript, image and other types of files, with paths specified usually in the <head></head> part of the file.
(by default I think most "builder" type programs will place the html files in the root directory of the project --
see the attached snapshots -- from the free Mobirise app -- good, but quickly "strangles you" as it's not very flexible, certainly not compared to CC -- but much easier for beginners, just you can't "go anywhere" with what's produced, at least imho -- mobirise operates off a project_mobirise master file, containing everything, producing output like html files from there
RSD operates off an .rsd file, which contains instructions but no actual "content" (Eric, that right?)

So, what sorts of files do you want to put in these separate folders, and why?
A question that should have been asked by "us" in the first place.

but if you want to use rsd to produce initial files, then put the files in the folders you want, and change all the links to point to their new locations, you can do that, but your initial rsd file won't be much good to you

I misunderstood what you were try to accomplish. You can't save pages to different directories at this time within the app. What you'll need to do is export the project and then import those exported files into your resources. Just make sure you add all the files to a folder in the resources or your pages will be broke.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Eric,
Thanks for the reply. I think I get the concept.
Why do I want directories for some pages?

My idea is that I am writing about 4 different sections and for each I want a different banner image and all the pages in that section will have the same look. The other 3 sections will each have their own 'look'. I will have temp pages for each section for later renaming and adding content. I suppose there would be other ways of creating the same idea with RSD in a flat file structure but I ran into trouble with the header image changing on all 4 temp pages I was attempting to create.

I have attached an image I mocked up that only shows the home page header. There will be 4 other similar layouts but you see only one header image with the attached jpg. I have made a drop down menu in Menu Builder that will replace the 4 visual boxes with links but the idea is the same.

Will all four sections be linked to the one home page, somewhere -- you do understand the significance of an "index.html" -- the default home page title -- though I don't think it's mandatory on all servers, not sure about CC
There should be nothing stopping you from naming all four section home pages anything you like ("Settings" for the pages, top right area), so, yeah, you could put them all into the same root directory as the other html files, without RSD confusing them, if you don't
not at RSD myself at this time, but it seems straightforward enough -- handcoding the pages one could easily do it, so surely RSD can

If I'm understanding you correctly I would make each in a separate project in RSD and export each of them to different directories. Then you can have one project where you place links to each project.

Russell,
For well more than a decade I have been creating sites by hand from scratch using an HTML Editor and TopStyle for css. With these tools there was never any problem keeping html files in specific folders on a site that had a need for such, and I wouldn't be making 4 new folders now except the design I want seems to need it. RSD is a learning curve for me and I am finding some limitations in spite of all the great capabilities, or maybe I should say 'the limitations go along with the benefits'.

Eric,
If I build each sections as a separate site and then assemble them later in HTML Editor will my menu links work? Of course the links go up a folder and down in another with the index page on the root as that is how I built the menu. I am guessing that it should all work and give me what I want.

Now, the question for me is... do I combine all the images, unique file names and all, into a single image folder and the same for resources all with unique names? This is getting more complicated than I want it to be.

Or, is there a way to use containers with unique names to hold the different header images I want for specific pages and never mind 4 separate folders???

Maybe my sense of creativity is pushing the envelope, but in any case it is pushing back.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
