Thanks, Inger and Twinstream, you both offered up solutions that solve my immediate issue. The 'button link icon' suggestion solved the button <span> issue and the 'list container' suggestion solved the link in the list item issue. I tried them both. Using them solved my immediate issue. Just out of curiosity...how would one add a <span> tag to an object if it was needed? Maybe it would not be needed and, as in this case, there is a better workaround. Thanks for the help!!

Under Display - More you find the option 'inline'. That is the one to use.
