Hi folks, either I'm doing something wrong or have a fundamental misconception about breakpoints on RSD V2 (build 2044). Or both! I've reduced my issue to a simple example. The RSD file is attached but you need to change txt to rsd as the .rsd file wouldn't upload. It is a single page (Index) and has only two rows, each of 1 column. It only has the two Foundation breakpoints. The basis is to start with a layout that works for a small screen then move to layouts that work for wider screens. This is what is confusing me - please try it yourself.

1) Open the file in RSD. Suggest you turn on grid rows and columns in the Guides. Check also that 'Default mode' is set in the Toggle breakpoints.
2) Move the slider a little left to ensure you don't accidentally activate the lower of the two breakpoints (640px)
3) Select row 2 and in 'Layout' divide the column, giving you 2 columns in row 2.
4) Select column 1 (in row 2) and set 'Spans' to 12 (If it works the same for you it will already say 12, if so set it to 9 - note the layout changes on the canvas - then set it to 12). Do the same with column 2 forcing the two columns to stack one above the other.
5) Move the slider to the right of the 640px breakpoint.
6) Select col 1 in row 2 and set spans to 6. Do the same for col 2. The columns now sit side by side.
7) Move the slider slowly to the left. What I see is that the side by side presentation of the columns persists as you pass the 640 px breakpoint going from right to left. And continues to do so until around 260 px when they stack.

I'd expected that as I moved to below the breakpoint (ie to a screen width less than 640px) for the two column to immediately stack as I'd originally set them up - but I'm obviously wrong in that!

In case it matters the base file of 2 rows was created by opening a new project, adding a row, deleting all other rows, deleting all the custom breakpoints, deleting all the pages except Index and deleting all images in resources. I'm on Windows 10, ASUS UX310UA.
Any help welcome!
Thanks, Pat

I tried to follow your points, Pat, but the two columns in row 2 stack immediately after hitting the lower breakpoint.
I return the file with my changes, then try to see if the same happens again or not.

Hi Inger,

Thanks for your prompt response. I've opened your file and get the same result as I did before. I've attached two screen shots two screen shots.

The 'Right' one is to the right of the 640 px breakpoint and 'Layout' tells me both columns are 6 spans.
The 'Left' one is to the left of the breakpoint and 'Layout' tells me both columns are 12 Spans. As you can see the breakpoint is not active but the columns are side by side.
The 'Stack' one shows where the two columns stack for me.

Not sure where next!!! I'll try a reinstall of RSD just in case something went wrong but I don't remember any errors.

I don't see why but could it be a screen resolution issue on my PC - it set to default of 3200 x 1800?

Any ideas welcome!!!

Pat

Hi Adrian,

I'm trying to find out if I have misunderstood how breakpoints work when designing mobile first or have just done something wrong - probably a 'muppet error'! I feel I was OK with RSD 1 working from full screen downwards so it is certainly possible I have not completely reversed the thinking.

Thanks for responding,

Pat

You're not alone finding transition from coffeegrinder to foundation or bootstrap difficult.
I'm sure Inger and others will sort your issue out.
I'm told it will all be worthwhile when we crack building from mobile up but for the life of me i cant see why it is better.

Hi,

I have uninstalled RSD, downloaded again and installed and still get the same result. There were certainly no errors or issues during the install. As others get what is expected then I guess it must be something to do with my environment (PC, Windows 10, and RSD V2 2044 install).

Any suggestions????
Thanks in advance,
Pat

Well, I'm on macOS here, RSD2 most recent release, and when I open your file (I had to change the extension from .txt to .rsd in order to be able to open it) and I follow your instructions, all works exactly how you'd expect it to work. It honours your breakpoints; stacking the columns for 639 and below, but lines them up horizontally for 640 and up.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for taking the time to test that out. One good thing for me is that my understanding about breakpoints was correct! It's just now a question about my installation / environment. As you can see in my reply to Inger my screen captures show a different result. I guess I'll keep trying!

Thanks again,

Pat

Hi Pat
The biggest thing i found when move to a breakpoint up or down you have to check the colums on the row settings i don't know why but they do seem to change there properties Good luck
