Grid compatibility - Post ID 288396

Good morning,

After a year or so of webdesign absence, I finally upgraded to Site designer V4 and would like to request some advise concerning compatibility of the grid layout. Since SD converts the old row and column based outline into container based outline, I would like to know whether that new converted format is browser safe.
To be more precise, I would like to know whether I can use the converted version of my site out of the box and upload it to the server straight away without mayor issues and then little by little do the cleanup of the classes, container nesting etc.?
Or do I have to do all the conversions and cleaning before using it on my hosting server?

Thanks
Berthold

We might have different experiences with this. And it will also depend on which programme and version you are upgrading from. In case of upgrading from RSD 2.5 Bootstrap or Foundation, it will be more or less an out-of-the-box thing. You can clean up the old elements by and by. For older versions, and especially if the project was designed with the 'coffeegrinder' framework, it might be a bit more involved, also depending a bit on the complexity of the site.

When converting to SD4.0 it will NOT automatically convert anything to CSS grid. That is something you have to decide on yourself, and I think it will be best to wait with that until you have cleaned up the code.

Hi Inger,
I am coming from RSD 2.5 / Foundation. The site was first designed and built with RSD2, so, according to what you said, I guess it should hopefully be a straight forward thing.

I'll make a backup copy and get started by putting it on a testing directory on my hosting server and see how it behaves in the real world...
Thanks for the help!

Ah, OK, I see what you mean. It just swaps rows and columns for row-type and column-type containers.
So the first course of action should be, as Suzanne put it in the tutorial, clean up those classes and extra containers. However, if I can bring it online as it is and then do the cleaning little by little, I will be perfectly fine. So, hopefully that will be my situation.
Thanks again!

You should be able to put the site online just after the migration to SD4. When you start cleaning, it is wise to keep an eye on which css properties are tied to those row types and column types. You may have to add them to the containers from where you remove the redundant class names. It seems to concern mainly margins and padding, maybe also width.
