Someone has probably asked this but I could not find it -

How do you set up a link that downloads a file when clicked. I have a site that has a pdf doc that opens fine in everything but firefox. Can't figure out why its not but to work around this I was going to have them just directly download to the users' machine and open

Set this up when RLM very first came out - I may have to edit it on there but trying to change everything over to RSD. Would assume its the same procedure

How the file opens depends on the file extension and what a browser supports. Some browsers can display a PDF in the browser and others cannot. This is because not all browsers support the same features. If you want to force a download, place the PDF inside of a ZIP file instead. All browsers will prompt to download the file when using that format.

Thanks Scott - simple fix. Can't understand why that pdf would open in all browsers but Firefox. tried resaving etc. slight modification and save and it just wouldn't so converted it to a Word .doc and put that up. like the zip idea

It really shouldn't be an issue Byron, because in the end it will "either" download "or" it will open "or" both, and the person on the other end gets the file either way. Usually if it opens, many times it downloads as well. If not then the person can usually save it from within the program that they are reading it in.

Anyone on the internet with half a brain these days knows that you need to have some type of PDF reader installed in order to open a PDF file and most computers are setup for that by this time. I wouldn't really worry about "how" it gets to the users, only that it does.

If you're worried they won't know what to do then the best thing to do is put some info by the download so they know to save it if it opens without saving it. Keep it simple.

So I haven't made it as far as this.... when I used VSD a link could be an email, url or document. In RSD email can apparently be handled with a "mailto:" in the link, but how do I make the link download a pdf?

Also, with PDFs, they automatically open in a PDF Reader (like Acrobat), which gives the user the options to save, download, print, share...
Due to security concerns, it's not a good idea to force a download – let users decide if they want to download/open the file.
