The "comments 3" on that template are there just for "show."

If you want the ability of a website visitor to leave comments, you will need to see what your host server offers because a database will need to host comments and you will need a way to code that commenting application into your website.

If you want a simple way, you can use some free services where you only need to paste some code to your website. These service operate the databases and interact with the code you provide them, but they will serve up ads in with the comments or near them in return.

Try https://disqus.com/. You can opt out of ads if you are a non-profit or a personal website. If you are a business they will have ads turned on, but if you have little traffic they may let you opt out. There are certainly other services that might offer add free commenting service for running adds on your site with the comments, or you would would have to pay for an ad-free service.

Disqus isn't really at all complicated. All you need to do is insert a little bit of code, which they provide, into your template where you want your comments to be. It can be set to email you whenever a comment is added or requires moderation. Unless you're using a blogging tool, it's one of the few options available for stress free commenting.

I use ExpressionEngine for my blog, but prefer to use Disqus for comments (not that my blog is terribly active. I'm in the process of re-tooling it and changing my focus), but here's an example to see it in action - http://kiwigrrl.net/view/big-frickin-mo … -adventure

KiwiGrrl, do you know if Disqus uses php? I need to have something to recommend for someone whose server doesn't have php.

Disqus uses external host so you only need to include script links.
