Unable to Upload Cart - Port 21...

I have tried to upload the cart on 2 different computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7 but get a message "Couldn’t connect to the server. There was a problem receiving data across the network. Check your system for firewalls and antivirus programs that may be blocking the program’s network access. You could also try to change the passive mode setting for this ser…(rest is cutoff)”

My web host told me to check that the Windows Firewall or AV program aren't blocking port 21. I'm a little unsure about how to proceed

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I get the cart uploaded?

Try pausing your anti-virus software before you try to upload, if it still doesn't upload try either pausing the firewall or adding that program to one it accepts if that is possible.

Generally pausing the antivirus program works in most cases...for me anyway.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.

Hi GB. If you have a separate ftp program on your system, try uploading a single blank text file onto your web server using port 21. If that works ok, then it is highly likely that you have entered the settings incorrectly for the server within Cart Creator.

Thanks for the responses. I tried pausing the AV (Windows firewall was already off) but it didn't work. I tried allowing the program through Windows firewall - which shouldn't matter if it's off but I did it anyway. No go.

Could it be the router? If my router is blocking port 21, I'm not sure I want to mess with it.

WILL UK - I'm not sure how to upload using port 21. I think the settings are okay - I checked those with the host.

Other info:
The site has joomla installed
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium
Passive mode is on

GB - Yes, your router could be blocking Port 21, or could even have an on-board Firewall activated. I don't mess with routers beyond basic set-up, so I couldn't really get into much help there. I do know you would typically go to your browser and type in an address # (such as 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 for examples, there are several possibilities and you'd have to find out what yours is). From there it will possibly ask you for UN & PW to access admin functions, if you've not set any you may need to use a default acct. such as admin or administrator. Then start looking for firewall settings and such.

Thanks Phil. As soon as i find the login info I'll check the router but I guess I'm wondering if I should have to mess with the router? Isn't Port 21 normally blocked for a reason? I want to be sure I SHOULD change it before I start messing with router settings.

The cart was so easy to create I thought uploading would be a cinch too. I guess I have reached my level of incompetence...

GB - I've not had to mess with any settings (on firewall, router, antivirus, etc...) with ANY of CC's software. I really don't know what port 21 does, or whether it's necessary to be blocked or not.

One other thought, if you haven't already, I'd highly recommend opening a support ticket. Although odds are pretty good that Scott or some other CC staff member will see your post on here, the support ticket is the 'approved' method of communication with CC for assistance, and would provide you with the quickest response. When you do get info from them (especially the helpful stuff) please come back here and update us, so others can learn from this experience as well.

Yes - I'm doing that now. I thought this might have been something someone had come across before but it seems rare. I'll update the post when I figure it out.

Thank you.

Have you double-checked your settings within SCC (correct server, username, and password; Protocol is set to FTP; Port is set to 21, etc.)?

Hi GB. When someone attempts to connect to your FTP Server, the FTP client will attempt the connection on Port 21 by default. Port 21 must be open for standard FTP clients to log in and connect to your server. As port 21 was sometimes used by hackers in the past, many routers and firewalls can sometimes block this port.

Within the servers section of Cart Creator, ticking the 'passive mode' box may solve your problem, as this in effect prevents a reverse data mode, which is the element that some routers and firewalls don't like. If this does't solve your problem, then as BookPublisher as pointed out above, one of your settings may be incorrect.
