I have been using Cubecart since 2006 and found that once I initiated a SEO script that did put the catagory and item name in the URL, I was able to be found and normally on page 1 of any google search. For instance do a search for "American Cowboy Coffee" or "Romane Fragrance" and my store shows up on page 1 at the towards the top.

It is true that there are available addons for both Cubecart and Zen Cart, that will replace the category and the name within the url line. The ones for Zen Cart are are typically 500k to 1.5 mB in size and generally free. It is the fact that neither Cubecart, Zen-Cart, or OSCommerce have felt the need to incorporate them into the standard program, that quantifies their perceived lack of importance.

The fact that I managed to find SCC powered carts in Google earlier, indicates the search engines are actually picking up peoples sites. The fact that you can't put meta keywords and descriptions for individual products with SCC is more likely to be a factor with search engine rankings perhaps?

I know very little about seo etc, and i previously relied heavily on cubecart
something is working i don't understand technically why

What you are looking for is a custom made module SEO URLS

This is an add on to many shopping carts some carts have this module as an option
There they are not included in Cubecart, Zen-Cart, or OSCommerce because the modules are made by the open source community for open source software projects. Some people use it some don’t

Cubecart, Zen-Cart, or OSCommerce only work on the basic cart software
SCC is proprietary to coffee cup so there only working on it and right now there working on much more needed features

With the correct keywords in your title and description it should be ok

Did you add a site map to your domain?

I used coffeecup google site mapper tool

prior to adding site map nothing appeared in google

But yahoo found site before sitemap was added

I have messed with carts from free all the way up to Actinic.
I have to say in my experience this software is the most search engine friendly
cart I have used.
The site I am working on at the moment is getting top 10 listings all over the place
on specific product searches with 1/2 million references, leap fogging businesses
that have been around for ever.
There are companies out there making a living with search engine optimization
that could not match these results.

The program is worth the money for this feature alone.

I have the product name as the title,
PLUS using the product name a further twice in the product description.
Once in the first line, and once near the end.
Works for me.
