Isolating updated files for FTP...
Hi CC Gurus,
I am hoping someone out there has the experience and knowledge to answer this problem.
I am at present creating a shop using SCC and SCD Pro which is coming along fine but the problem I have is I prefer to use an external FTP software and therefore use the ' Export Shop For Upload ' function.
This works fine but unfortunately date stamps every file with the same date so its impossible to see which file actually changed and therefore the option is to re upload everything each time or do as I have been doing and that is try and workout which file may have changed through trial and error by uploading and then checking by refreshing the browser.
This is very time consuming and laborious and I am sure there must be someone who knows which files are constants and which ones need to be changed... this of course also will change dependent on what was actually modified in the website.
But a guideline at the minimum would be appreciated.
Also is it possible to edit the compiled files in an external editor?
Thanks in anticipation.
The website is still in its infancy: http://www.mcrobbo.info/aqua/

May I ask why you do not use the built in uploader? When you use the one in the software it will automatically sync with your Website uploading only the changes. Far easier then trying to track everything manually.
I never kept a list of files that only need to be uploaded with each change, so I really can't offer any suggestions there.

Hiya Ian,
As much as you love using external FTP for this, I would strongly suggest you use the internal updater for SCC. This will become a very important factor if you decide to update to the PRO version of SCC when it's released. There are many things that will really need internal uploading done for syncing between the server and the files. This is also the best way to be sure all things that are needing to be uploaded are done so and that you don't miss something or mess something up accidentally that will break your shop. So many things can go wrong when uploading externally, and truly there is no reason to do so with this program if you do it correctly.
The SCC program only uploads what has changed and nothing and I do mean NOTHING should be edited outside of the program for your shop. Only things that are changed in the program are uploaded so if you alter a product it's changed, if you remove one it's changed, if you change anything that's all that is altered in the upload so it isn't uploading your entire shop each time.
Use the internal uploader and that way you will be sure all is uploaded correctly, timely, less hassle and with the new PRO version coming out soon it will be almost a necessity anyways so best to get into that habit now

Hi Scott (do you ever sleep?) and Jo Ann,
Thanks both for your input... to answer why I use an external FTP is probably down to habit as I use one when building other websites and being a bit of a geek I like to see the files and inner structure of the websites.
I appreciate both your comments and must be honest didn't realize that the up-loader actually synchronized the files... I will definitely give it a go...
Thanks again for your prompt responses.
Regards
Ian

You're quite welcome Ian, hope you find it as easy as I do and let us know if there are any problems with it, but it should work pretty smoothly
