Yes, I understand, I design and implement SQL/MySQL based database solutions for a living...

But it could/would be a totally optional feature.

Yes, this product is a simple solution for ecommerce, but a little TOO simple. There is no means of capturing even your customer's info, accept manually through your payment processor's email; no marketing modules and evidently no plans to implement any of this. Even cheap and easy to install forums software has the ability to set up a quick MySQL database, and are not by any means PCI compliant...speaking of refunds...

From the Security Standards (PCI) site

"If you are a merchant that accepts payment cards, you are required to be compliant with the PCI Data Security Standard."so it seems to me that as long as you continue to use the various card processors without storing card info you would be OK to store names, order details etc.

This sounds to me as though we need to be PCI compliant. We accept credit card payments. Or is it that we don't accept the payments but our merchant processors do? (PayPal, Authorize.net, etc.) Therefore we don't need to be compliant?

The standards apply to all organizations that store, process or transmit cardholder data – with guidance for software developers and manufacturers of applications and devices used in those transactions.

Since your server does not process or transmit cardholder data, your server does not need to be compliant.

There it is in a nutshell! How can prospective customers of this software take the software serious when it doesn't even capture the most important information - second only to the sale - the customer information i.e. name, email address, what they bought etc. (credit card info is not necessary to capture) This provides ZERO after-market marketing ability, unless you want to spend tedious hours manually doing what most every other ecommerce system does automatically.

I hope I get enough customers that I have to worry about that! :D

All that information is EASILY accessible through the merchant's website. You can even export that information to any program. No need to spend hours, you can do it in a relatively short amount of time. Also when an order is placed, you as the shop owner receive an email with all the information about the order and who ordered what. This gives you two separate ways to capture, store and log any information you want.

At the end of the day, it is all about buying the shopping cart solution that is most suited to your needs.

Virtually all shopping carts offer either free limited trial versions, or comprehensive online demos to help make that decision. You evaluate what you require from a cart and make an informed decision on what is best suited to your requirements before you purchase. Otherwise it's a bit like buying a two seater sports car and moaning two weeks later, that there are no seats in the back.

My take on this issue is that the CoffeeCup Cart is a simple system. Anyone can have an online store without paying a monthly fee to host a cart with more features, or pay a developer to handle the php and mysql.

I can only imagine the support issues CoffeeCup would have to deal with concerning a mysql database because a good amount of their customer base doesn't know anything more than point and click. So I really don't blame them for this decision.
